Former AWA pilots indicted.......

What a way to s%^tcan a career.

On a lighter note, I especially love these two quotations -
"Hughes and Cloyd were in the cockpit of the plane as it was being towed to the runway for takeoff from Miami International Airport on a flight to Phoenix, Arizona, when air traffic controllers ordered the plane back to the gate."

--Now why would a plane have to be TOWED to the runway? Isn't that what the engines are for?

"A security screener told authorities she smelled alcohol on the pilots, and later said in court that the aroma was so strong she feared they would light up "like a dragon" if anyone lit a match."

--How overly dramatic can you get? "Light up like a dragon"?Sheesh.

Gotta love the media.

Yeah, I just read the article earlier and was thinking what the F***!!! How do these guys just throw their career away? They know exactly what's at stake. And that includes all of the busted pilots for that matter. It just makes think that maybe it's something they've been doing for awhile and getting away with. Wow!!!

But really, I'd like to know the crews side of the story and their thought process when they decide to go out and have a few drinks or whatever.

And yeah, "That'll be a combo #1. Drive through to the first window."

Wow thats a shame for those two guys, I mean you can say well they had a bad night and yata yata yata but they had such a huge responsiblity to uphold. It's people like this that give us a bad name.

I don't even think they could get an entry-level non-aviation job anywhere with that on their record.

More job-openings for us!!

p.s. a little overkill from the screener though

Guess the people riding with them from the hotel to the airport didnt read dougs post in the "Your the Captain" group.

Hope may not completely be lost if you remember they Northwest pilots several years ago and got nailed for being drunk the Captain actually got all his license back after having to start over with pvt pilot written all the way to ATP. He had to take each flight test over also. At the time Northwest supporting him. He eventually satisfied the FAA and Northwest and they hired him back I think as a Captain. I read the story he wrote and he swore he couldnt think of anything worse short of losing a family member that having his whole career and life yanked away because of one stupid night. According to the article he changed many things in his life for the better.

I'm sure it happened so quick that no one could catch it. The bad thing is that with a morning pickup, everyone is half asleep and reeks of toothpaste, mouthwash and deodorant so no other crewmember could sense that they had alcohol on their breath.

But if you're in a similar circumstance and you knowingly let your crewmember cross the aircraft threshold, you're going to end up in the chief pilot's office for "breakfast" along with the accused crewmember and probably even suspended or even fired.

Funny story.

A couple of semesters ago, we had a guest speaker in one of my classes - a NWA Captain and instructor. He was talking about hiring, and requirements (when they start hiring again) and the interview process. He harped for about 15 minutes about how there's no way in h$ll you'll ever fly for NWA if you have an alcohol related incident.

So, I eagerly raise my hand and ask, "Wasn't it NWA that fired a Captain for flying drunk, and then hired him back a few years later? I think he even made Captain again...".

He gets quiet, looks at me and says, "There's always one in every group....".

But wasn't that because he was an alcoholic and sought treatment? It wasn't just some guy who said, hey, let me get ripped and fly. It was a guy with a serious medical problem.
