Not sure where to stick this question... maybe some other military pilots have run into this situation.
I know someone who is in the US with a foreign military service. He would like to get his CFI. He is not looking to work full time at an FBO, just looking to give BFRs, maybe some other training to other foreign military personnel in GA aircraft as an independent CFI. His concern is the legality of it. I know the one extreme is most likely illegal- his being a full time/part time employee on the books. But I've also seen the other side of the spectrum... the guy who is a mechanical wiz and helps out some of his buddies reparing their cars on the side, usually not for money, but in a barter... such as for beer. I also saw foreign military pilots as CFIs at military aero clubs (granted this was pre-9/11). This may also be illegal, but I've never heard of anyone being deported for it. Does anyone have any references?
