FO-CA Time clarification

Looking on Airlinepilotcentral.com I am unclear about something.
The website shows payscales for many airlines with the year of position to the left of the scale. Say for instance a FO after 4 years becomes a CA. Does he then make the first year scale for a CA or does he enter at the fourth year position. It seems like an easy answer but then there are airlines with little difference between the pay rates for a FO and CA at similar years in position.

It's when your employed as a pilot.

For instance, 3rd year FO upgrades to captain, he makes 3rd year CAPTAIN pay.

one of the sites I saw had a notation if you return to year one after an upgrade.
 
Some airlines are different. There are pay rates for CA much less than a 3rd year FO. But who comes in as a 1st yr CA.

Then there are airlines which show 1st yr CA pay higher than a 3rd yr FO.
It must be different for each.

You're talking about first year CA compared to third year FO?

Usually airlines all first year starting pay BLOWS. I guess a way of paying dues at the airline. That's why you might see pay as a first year captain worse than a third year first officer.

If they are hiring captains or are in need of a captain, they can hire an off the street captain. Most likely, will need lots of time and experience.

But for as much as i know once you are hired as a pilot, seniority carries onto captain.

If not, it'd blow really bad. Can you imagine being a 10 year FO and making 100k then moving to first year captain pay at 50k? Just wouldnt make sense. Maybe there are some airlines like this though.
 
For most jobs the pay blows for the first year or so. The idea is that if you don't get the "regular" raises (which are really performance raises) you'll either get the hint and leave, look for other work, or starve to death. Either way the company doesn't have to worry about you anymore.

Traditionally it's years of seniority.

If Bigey was a 9-year FO and upgraded to captain, he'd become a 9-year captain.

Not necessarily. Depends on the company and the contract (if there is one).

Yes, because they want to get rid of their $20,000-$40,000 investment in training. :sarcasm:
