Flying VFR around the Vegas strip

I want to fly down near the strip in a 172. It seems like there are a few helicopter places that do it, so I assume there is some procedure for doing it. Anyone have any details? It looks like it is right in the McCarran Class B.

Heck yea it's possible! The lower the better

You'd have to make the request with LAS TRACON. L30 has an LOA with LAS tower regarding airspace designated to them from the TRACON, and the area of the strip falls within that. Helicopters operating on tours around the strip, flying in that in-trail circle they fly in when doing so, are cleared by LAS tower to do so. Whether a fixed wing can get in on doing something similar, I imagine, will be based on traffic loads both in/near LAS, as well as participating helo traffic already on the strip route.

Thanks. That's the inside info I was looking for.

Being a helo guy, alot of what we deal with when it comes to getting in/around Class B airspace, and some Class C airspace, is done by LOA with the applicable TRACON/tower, depending on who owns said airspace. The whole concept of us being able to go here, there and everywhere, while avoiding the general flow of fixed wing traffic, is why.

Come in from the south toward HND. Tell them you would like a transition to VGT. They usually give you direct HND. Cross the approach end of 25 at las. Depart on a heading. Usually takes you over the strip once your on the west side they will hand you off to Vgt tower. But this all depends configuration and traffic flow of course

My first time flying there was in an ATP cessna coming up from PHX. The ATC instructions were "overly the 25 numbers, Direct the stratosphere (but don't hit it!), enter the right downwind for North Vegas, altitude your discretion". Kind of cool.

Yes, when you talk with departure/approach, just tell them you want to fly up the strip. I used to do this nearly every time I flew out of VGT while I was stationed at Nellis and living in North LV. Very easy, with instruction similar to what BobDDuck indicated.

In my experience, I usually got one pass each direction, then they were looking for me to go somewhere else.

I'll be renting from HND. I'll just ask my instructor what's best. Just wanted to make sure it was possible.

Just be careful not to piss every jet owner off at Henderson like we did when we ran 24 Apaches through there in June....

Sorry to anybody that spent 4 hours cleaning dirt and rocks out of the challengers and citations parked with the doors open when we dusted out the whole airfield. I tried to stop the hover taxi nonsense but that wasn't my day to be flight lead.

Dude. You owe me beer. Lots and lots of beer. I managed to get the door shut in time. That dust storm was hard on the paint. And the owner is pissed about the leading edges.

Lies. Never have 24 Apaches been FMC at the same time. ;)

Best part is, active duty Army aircraft don't seem to ever have any specific unit tail codes or markings.....nothing that can actually identify what specific unit they're from. Well done!!

I was stationed at Camp Humphrey‘s ROK for a year when I was a generator mechanic in the AF. I'm convinced those "Cav" dudes would go home put on thier flight suits, cowboy hats and spurs just to go to the club at night. Even if they had they day off. There were like 200 hundred of us AF and several thousand Army. It got "interesting" some times. :)

You have no idea how close to the truth that really is! Oh, I have some stories....but that is a whole other matter.
