Flying to KMTH

Y'NO WUT IM SAYIN
I'm planning to fly to Marathon to check on a friend's house. He wants me to take extra gas, water, food, etc with me for another friend down there. Has anybody ever flown with gas cans in a Cessna? I don't think there would be anything to prohibit it, I just don't know if it's smart to do it. Thanks!

I'd think that it'd be considered hazmat. There's a whole thing about flying hazmat.

Here ya go. There is a section in there about flying gasoline in the cabin.

And before anyone starts yelling about, "But Part 91!" There's this little gem:

Even though a private or general aviation business aircraft operating under Part 91 is, in fact, a private aircraft, the movement of this aircraft at public use airports, parking at public FBOs, and flying in the national airspace system, exposes the general public to the dangers of these materials. Fire fighters, rescue personnel, and others are at unnecessary risk when hazardous materials are transported and in aircraft not in compliance with the regulations. In the event of any aircraft incident or accident, there can be serious dangers to aircraft, crew, passengers and the general public. Therefore, compliance with the regulations is required.

So, we're not allowed to haul fuel in our aircraft?

in proper containers and allowed quantities, yes you can. The aircrafts fuel tanks are exempted from the regulations as they are covered by the certification of the airframe.

Gasoline is Class 3. Usually that's limited to 55 pounds. So, about 9 gallons. There are exceptions.

I don't know how much fuel you need for the round trip or how much your plane holds. Is there a chance you could simply siphon AvGas from your plane when you get there?

Looks like they opened Marathon to GA but I would call ahead and check on fuel. Key West has fuel for sure via Signature at $6.45/gal. I was down there yesterday.

So if he carries the gas cans, he'll be responding to the emergency. Perfect. ;)

That would be my reading, for future reference. The OPS center listed might have a different opinion, and there isn't a huge amount of parking space down there, so you'd likely be a low priority.

I recommend looking into the risks of carrying fuel in a cabin of a Cessna. I had a fuel leak near the shutoff valve of a 152, that soaked the carpet. I would say it was "intoxicating."

I ended up driving down with a bunch of supplies. The airport opened on Tuesday to GA traffic. It looked like they had some AF CCTs working ATC at KMTH. They were in the grass next to the runway with some antennas set up.

While the keys are a mess, the response was amazing. First responders, utility workers, National Guard soldiers came through in a big way to start the long process of rebuilding the keys!
