Floridian Flight Schools?

Airport Bum!
I am trying to research decent flight schools here in Florida. I would like to go all the way up to get my CFI and here in Jacksonville, my option is either ATP or "The Academy." I have a friend that was a former CFI for DCA and highly discurages me to go there. My problem with ATP is that you have to have a first class medical to go there. I am a "husky" guy that is not to far from "fluffy" so that might be a problem with my first class. If I fly professionaly, I just want to fly the small stuff, I could care less about the airliners.

Another school I am looking at is Pan Am Flight Academy that was recommended by a friend of mine that went there. Is there any decent flight academies in this state?

Some frank advice:

If you can't get a 1st class medical, don't waste your money getting into professional aviation. It's not just the airliners that require a 1st class medical, it's required any time you are exercising the privileges of an ATP certificate.

You don't know that you can't get a 1st Class Medical if you don't try. So I'd do that first, before worrying about how you might be affected.

Go to your local airport and take a tour, talk to the guys and see who you get along with. Big academies are not the only way to get your ratings. They are a good 2 to 3 times more expensive and you're not always getting top notch instruction. No offense, but my personal experience with instructors from the big academies is that they only want to get to the airlines as fast as they can and really don't have a real desire to impart good knowledge on their students.

I believe I can get a first class, cause I got a second class with no problem. I got it to see if I can pass the medical requirements for the FAA ATC program. I already work at an airport and have been in our tower plenty of times. I have been in the Aviation Industry since 03, so I have been around. I have also worked in motion picture and television industry for a bit too, and It have its ups and downs.

Besides IfI fly, It would be for video, cinematography, etc. I would be flying as a DP (Director of Photography) or for DP's. I could care less about flying for airlines, If I do fly for them great but I could really care less about it.

As everyone else will probably say, any mom and pop part 61 school can do the same thing for you, probably faster and cheaper. I personally would talk to some local CFIs first.

There is no shortage of quality flight training in Florida.

www.Aviator.edu in Fort Pierce, we are in the old Pam Am Academy facility at St. Lucie County Airport.

I'm a CFI Student at Aviator now. Check out the website, if you have any questions PM me.
