Just wondering if there any flight schools at RDU besides ATP that are any good??

Or is there another airport in the Durham area that caters more to GA?

A really good one that i went to in Shilo (KSIF) i just heard was getting ready to close down :(.

At RDU I'm only aware that ATP has a campus there.

There is a flight school on the field in Burlington last time i checked. They have 172's and such. (Cessna Pilot Center i think)

There might be a school east of RDU....but its been years since i've been there, and i'm not sure nowadays.

About 1/2 way between RDU and Greensboro.

Probably in the neighborhood of 30-45 min. from RDU airport, of course depending on traffic and what side of Raleigh you are coming from.

But from Durham....probably less.

There are a few flight schools around RDU. Flightgest is really good, and I learned out at Lake Ridge, which is 8NC8. The flight school there is real good, and when I went through them it was relatively cheap. I've also gone through the flight school at JNX and at TTA. I moved from RDU 1.5 years ago, and that's where I did all my flying. Let me know if you need any more help or questions

FlightGest is located @ RDU, in the TacAir building I believe. I think it's kind of pricey though. Are you at Duke?

I am one of the CFIs at FlightGest. I'll be glad to answer any questions you may have.

NC BE300- yes there is a helicopter school at Franklin Co.(LHZ)

Flightgest might be a little pricey but the equipment they have is real nice. I did my g1000 training there when it first came out. Located on the 2nd story of the Tac air building. What are you going after for training?

That would be great I was wondering what the cost of lessons in a C172 would be or is there a variety of prices depending on the make of the 172?

Also if you could roughly estimate how much in total it would cost to get a PPL?

I haven't flown in quite awhile so do the hours that I have flown awhile back still count now or do they expire after some point?

How many licenses could I get at your school?

Thank you in advance.

Jim: does FlightGest also rent airplanes? Or is it just flight instruction?

Right now we have two G1000 172s. They go for $148/hr and $48/hr for the CFI. The prices are the same for the other flight schools in the area with the same aircraft. There are some other flight schools around that offer a cheaper rate, but the aircraft are much older. Your hours that you have logged before are still good. They do not expire. You can get all of your licenses and ratings here. PVT-CFI(we send most of our people to burlington to fly the arrow they have for the 10 hrs of comlpex time required for the commercial). We dont have a multi at the moment, but there are other schools that have one. We do a lot of private and instrument ratings. RDU is a great place to fly out of. On occasion we have to wait a few extra minutes to get going because of a long taxi or airliners, but the ATC experience is great. Most of the time we get out without any wait. Hope that answer everything. Don't hesitate to ask if I missed something.

Rodelu- yes, the planes are also available to rent

What is the difference between part 61 and 141??? My old school was 141 and said that I should look for a school that is 141 I don't really know what the difference is.

Part 61 and Part 141 are different sets of rules for flight training.

Part 141 schools are have to be inspected and approved by the FAA. Basically everything done at the Part 141 school has to be approved by the FAA. That could include the training syllabus, the aircraft used, policies and so on.

Part 61 is more relaxed flight training, and the FAA isn't looking over the school quite as much. Part 61 covers most FBOs and independent instructors whereas part 141 really is for more structured flight schools.

The only thing that will probably matter to you is that your ratings can be completed in less time if you're in a Part 141 program. I think it's 35 hours for PPL (vs. 40 part 61) and 200 hours for Commercial (vs. 250 part 61). Even if you are training part 61, some schools will operate more along the lines of a part 141 school (with extended syllabus and/or training course outline) so if you really want the structure, I'm sure FlightGest would be able to provide you with that.

I'm not sure why your school is telling you that you should look for a part 141 school. All the flying you've logged so far will go towards your certificates even if you switch to part 61.

Thank you for the information. I didn't really look into it before I started flying and just went with the FBO I felt most comfortable with.

Feel free to come in and meet everyone. Myself or another CFI will show you around and we can look through the course material and answer any other questions you may have.
