Flight school search in NYC

can anyone tell me of a good flight school around the NYC area. That isnt expensive but has good maintainance that they have been to lately.

I have been thinking to Air Fleet Systems at Caldwell and their cheapest plane goes for $118/hr. Is this a good price for this economic downturn?

Thanks Jason

What plane is it? How much does instructor cost? Really, NYC isn't a great place for flight training. Better of going to jersey, or even PA.

$118 for a 172 is really pricey.

That is VERY expensive. During the fuel heyday of last summer at my flight school the rate for a Cessna 310 (multi) was $200/hr and instructor $45. Only $67 more than this school's 172.

A 152 rented for $66, but this is TX.

If you're in CDW you should visit Century Air. I believe its $170/hr for instruction in a 172N. Maintenance is top notch, I'm getting my PPL there right now.

I'd recomend Century Air as well. Very nice facility and staff, but it is a little pricey. They have older planes but again they are maintained really well. You can go there and check things out first,if you decide you want to enroll.

Theres also MacDan at CDW which may be cheaper, but I don't know anything about their facility or maintenance. I have heard some good things, but also some sketchy things.

Also further out in New Jersey is Solberg Airport. This would probably be a very cheap option, but it is probably a good hour from NYC. They have 2 older Cessna 172's that are in great condition, they just got brand new interiors. I believe the one had a new engine put into too, but not totally sure. Those go for 99 an hour, plus 35-40 for the cfi, so not bad at all. They also have a really nice Cessna 172SP which I fly all the time. That runs for 125 an hour and again 35-40 extra for the cfi. Renting that new plane would be the same price as renting one of Century's older planes. Solberg is no Century Air though. Solberg really has the feel of a good old ma and pa FBO. It's not the prettiest place to look at, but they have really nice experienced CFI's and pretty descent planes and they would probably be a much cheaper option imo.

How much would it cost for 1hr of training with an instructor and fuel cost. I dont know how it works so i just curious about the cost.

Thanks for your advice. Century air looks interesting.

AT isn't exactly a good example of a "well maintained" fleet of trainers. That 310 flew for 3 months in an unairworthy condition when I was there.

did you try Long Island? there are a bunch of schools out there , at farmingdale , Mc arthur and Brookhaven
i can name a few if you are interested , Heritageflightacademy.com
midislandair.com
and academyofaviation.com
prices in new york are exorbitant for flight training , i'd recommend you go somewhere in the midwest , or the west coast , you will save half the cost .
good luck

Granted. It's actually was pretty good towards the end of my tenure there, we had to convince Hameed to pay for the STC to install alternators instead of generators which kept going out.

The FAA really cracked down on AT, many ramp checks. Many of the instructors (not me) had to take 709 rides. It's getting to the point where it is like a regular FBO.

That's good to hear. I have really mixed emotions about AT. Hameed gave me m first break which was great, but the MX durring my time there was simply unacceptable.

If you are interested, I flight instruct in Bridgeport, CT (KBDR). I know it's a commute, but i've had three students sucessfully make it happen.

Airplanes are Grumman Tigers. $85/hour dry. Instructor is $35/hour.

PM me if you are interested.

It's $170 for the hour, which includes the instructor and fuel. Fuel tanks are always topped off before a flight.

Ive saw those but they are expensive too and a little further than Century Air or Air Fleet systems. Id rather stay in the city and pay a little more. Ill still have to go to college starting this year.

Thanks for thoughts!:)

Pretty cheap from the others but its an Hr drive. Can you tell me the site.

I would look at accellerated training somewhere. There are lots of places here(Florida) that do it. I know of a "club" you can join and fly really cheap. Instructor rate here is $35 per hour. Planes go from $45 to $60 per hour dry. PM me if you need a suggestion. Seems like it would be worth spending a week in Florida! You could easily get your Sport Pilot license in a week or your private in about 2. JOE

Ive been looking at ATP flight schools and they have a airline career pilot program for $55,000. YOu start from zero time and end with 270hrs with private, commercial and CFI ratings. But ive heard that its way expensive than a regular flight school.

Is $55,000 too much for what their offering or is it better to do training ina regular flight school around the NYC area? Renting a plane and instructor is very expensive around here.

They only have new 172's and they go for 135/hr +45/hr instruction. They also have a lightsport for 100/hr.

The 152s go for 80/hr. There's 4 of them and they're just as good as 172s for getting your private or building time.
