Flight Plans IFR

I know this has been covered. You really do not have 2:00 past you ETD, I dont care what any of you say!:)

Vegas HND said they only keep them for 1:30 and LGB said (implied) 1:00 as I keep finding out the hard way. CCR is also 1:00. Why is this so non standard? It would make it much more convenient if I just knew when I was to turn into a pumpkin as my passengers are never on time and my day sometimes has 4 back to back quick turn legs to it. A delay on the first leg and a late passenger on the second can lead to pushing this limit. I believe this is a local custom type of thing.

If you're not going believe what we tell you, then you should go with what they told you at the individual facility. ZDC and all the other east coast centers use 2 hrs as a min. If you have that much variable time you need to get accustomed to calling and modifying the times.

all i can tell you in Chicago the normal drop is 2 hrs could be a socal LA center thing.

5-1-12. Change in Proposed Departure
Time
a. To prevent computer saturation in the en route
environment, parameters have been established to
delete proposed departure flight plans which have not
been activated. Most centers have this parameter set
so as to delete these flight plans a minimum of 1 hour
after the proposed departure time.
To ensure that a
flight plan remains active, pilots whose actual
departure time will be delayed 1 hour or more beyond
their filed departure time, are requested to notify ATC
of their departure time.
b. Due to traffic saturation, control personnel
frequently will be unable to accept these revisions via
radio. It is recommended that you forward these
revisions to the nearest FSS.
So it seems it is 1:00 as a minimum. Lets say my ETD is 0800, now it is 0855 and it looks like I will not be ready for departure untill 0930. Could I get on with CD and change it with them? Tell them to not throw it away and I will take them out for beers? Could I conceivable get my clearance and wait another 2:00 or even 3:00 hours before departing? I am a little confused. Is it that your flight plan is scrapped after one hour after your ETD if you do not get a clearance but if you get your clearance it is good for 2:00 after that? I was used to knowing to not pick up a clearance untill w/n -:30 from ETD.

"Flight plan activated" for IFR - Does this happen after your clearance or weels up?

After the FP goes to Center FSS cannot modify the times, a whole new FP must be created. This is what I am trying to avoid here. At least this has been my experience with FSS. Same thing with the internet except it is much more user friendly to use a smart phone to re file.

I know I should not be flying airplanes with this level of knowledge but someone actually hired me!

Thanks

You can ask CD to amend the proposed departure time to keep it in the system longer. I wouldn't recommend just getting the clearance without mentioning your proposed time, because if CD doesn't notice you're calling for it minutes before it's scheduled to drop, they might issue it to you and then it drops anyway.

You can always get your clearance. According to the tower at CGF you have 3 hours after obtaining your clearance before it is canceled. Link said previously, tell the tower so they know what to expect for delays.

But it's not after obtaining your clearance. The "drop" time is based off the proposed depature time. At my airport, if you filed for 1830Z and call at 2120Z, with a drop time of 3 hours in effect, then your flight plan will still drop at 2130Z unless either of us change the proposed time.

most times at my facility i will update a flight plans proposed time so it wont time out (especially if i see the a/c come in and is running late). As far as getting your clearance, so it wont time out...dont count on that...some controllers will update your flight plan, others will just let it time out and tell you to refile when you call ready for taxi. Your best bet would be to just call clearance and ask them to update your proposed time. it takes less than a minute
