Flight in a glider

Does anyone know where in this area you can find a place to go soaring? I remember a UND ground instructor making mention of it being around here somewhere, but I don’t remember. That would be an awesome thing to try out this summer… can’t wait! :D

Also, does anyone know about how much this costs per hour?

I suppose that I could just go back and talk to this instructor (or whip out an AFD or sectional to find a place) but, I’m curious if any of you have done this before? It’s always fun to try new things, explore other parts of aviation, and gain other experiences… and, I'd like to add soaring to my experiences :)

That's how I got into flying. I started flying gliders when I lived in Europe (It's pretty big over there). My neighboor was an instructor. It's pretty cool. Don't know much about soaring in ND, but there are quite a few soaring clubs around the country. Costs depend on where you go, usually there is a club fee, and then you pay a tow fee depending on how high you want to go.

Well, a quick look at the sectional shows a glider symbol near Pembina (PMB), but maybe there’s a place closer to GFK than that?

If you go to the Soaring Society of America's website there are locations listed. As of right now I dont think that there are any glider clubs or schools in North Dakota but there are a few in MN. One thing to be aware of is how much are you paying for your tow. Tow rates can add significant cost to your flight.

So how much can this cost then (roughly, all costs included)? Cheaper than renting an average 172? or more expensive?

There's a dude who pulls out his powered paraglider and flies around South Grand Forks pretty frequently in the summer. No idea who he is, but it looks like a blast.
