Flight engineer, logging time......

I am currently considering entering the Air Force as a Flight Engineer (if that position is open and not until the middle of next year). Anyway my question is this; as a FE what kind of time can you log?

It's covered in this thread.

It's wonderful what you'll find when you Google!

From Gleim.com

A commercial pilot may credit the following flight time toward the 1,500 hr. of total pilot time.

Flight-engineer time, provided the time:

Is acquired in an airplane required to have a flight engineer by the airplane's flight manual or type certificate

Is acquired while in operations conducted under Part 121 for which a flight engineer is required

Is acquired while the person is participating in a pilot training program under Part 121

Does not exceed more than 1 hr. for each 3 hr. of flight-engineer flight time for a total credited time of not more than 500 hr

Now it's your turn to find out if there is credit for given to military FE's (they don't operate under Part 121)

Good Luck,

JR

i'm no expert on this subject or any other subject for that matter but i don't think 500 hrs of flight engineer time even though it counts toward total time is going to add up to a hill of beans in an employers eyes should they go through your logbook. i met a 747 FE from polar air cargo in flight school and he didn't mention anything about logging that time. he did say that they were going to upgrade him to FO (or give him a shot at upgrading) once he gets 1000TT. at the time i believe he had around 300TT. none of that FE time. judging from the conversations we had, he would have mentioned adding FE time to his total time for the upgrade.

Well, he asked & I'd seen the answer once before, so I researched it for him. As a FE for one enlistment, he'll more than likely will get over 1500 hours. Thus, he can apply 500 hours towards his ATP. While you may find it strange that anyone would be given any real consideration for his FE time, I find it strange that someone with only 1000 TT would make FO on a 747, at least in this job market.

Happy landings,

JR

So at least some of my time will count at least for TT. As of now i'm kinda divided between 3 jobs in the Air Force; aviation mechanic, Airfield management apprentice, and FE. Would I be wrong to say that FE would be the most useful thing to put on a resume for F/O out of all of my other choices? Thanks for all of your input

i don't think it's strange at all. he has been an FE with the company for something like 8 years. he's good friends with all the right people. no different than an airline hiring one of their interns at 800 hours while guys of the street need 1500-2000 hrs just to be competitive. by the way, i wasn't knocking the FE.

so if only 500 hours of TT from FE time is considered for your ATP will the other FE time be considered as far as mins for employment?? lets say that your had 1000 hrs of FE time and 500 hrs of actual time flying planes making your TT 1500 hrs would an airline or other potential employer consider all of your FE time as TT for their mins??
