Flashing lights

The other day I saw a business jet (not sure of the make) climbing out from BCT with the lights at the wing roots flashing (alternating) much like a police car's headlights flash when they have the siren on. The lights weren't going out but rather were dimming. Why were they doing that?

It's done to increase visibility. People and birds tend to notice the flashing lights much sooner than they do the steady ones. You can get this done on just about any plane that has two landing light or a taxi/landing light combination. One of my friends used to have his C-185 setup this way. I believe they call it a "swag light system".

It's called a Pulse Light system. A lot of operators install them for better visibility (as in others seeing the airplane).

We had them in the Beech 18s and King Airs that we flew over Los Angeles.

Southwest has some airplanes equipped with pulse lights.

I've seen departing Southwest 737's with those... at the wing root and also farther out on the wing. Looks pretty cool when all four are on and are alternating.
