Hi ladies and glentleman. I got to go on my introduction flight today. Not with an instructor, but a pilot I met at studentpilot.com. It was an awesome experience, but I felt a little airsick. Is it normal to feel this way on the first flight? He did a whole bunch of touch and go's so it was a little worse. But it was all very cool and thanks to him I did it. Sorry for not being detailed, I'll write up all the details and post some pictures later. Just tell me if it is normal to feel airsick the first time?

The short answer is YES. With all the nerves and excitement you had, it was probably the main cause of the airsickness. Its no big deal and you'll overcome it quickly.

Dude, totally! My first lesson/flight, and I was controlling in the left seat, I tossed my five pounds of greasy bacon from that morning. One of the most miserable feelings ... I was so bummed out for the rest of the day, depressed even. I thought my career in aviation was over. "How can I become an airline pilot if I'm puking at the controls?!"

The second lesson was much better. Queasy and light-headed somewhat, but no vomitage. Third time, just a slight trace. Forth time and on, I couldn't get enough!

Chuck Yeager got airsick his first time out ...

I got sick (didn't purge though) when I was instructing over Gilroy during garlic season with an equally odoriferous student. And I actually almost yakked last week flying home on an America West A-319 in some of the worst turbulence I've seen in about two years.

yep, sounds like you had some of the 1st time jitters. I had the same on my intro flight back in november, but didnt vomite. Keep at it, it'll go away!

I got sick my first few flights, and it really scared me cuz I had never gotten any kind of motion sickness before. But like everyone else said, it went away, and I haven't felt bad again, 175 logged hours later. Good luck.

Oh man I almost forgot to post this here. Last week I was doing some instructing with my stud student and he wants to have his son take a lesson and swap seats. So the son goes up first and does fine (they both have a friend that has a plane and have better than beginner skills). So I have no problem letting the kid sit backseat and watch his dads lesson. So I have his dad do all the stuff a near solo student would do and as we are doing on the 45 to downwind ....BLOOP! All over my neck and headset and in my hair! It was everywhere (think marvin getting shot in the face in pulp fiction), I think the kid must have been eating red licorice. About a monthago I even felt a litlle quesy in some turbulence. So it can happen to anybody but especially a newbie!

Jesus Brian, (Okay I couln't resist)

Don't sweat it dude. With all the excitement that builds up prior to the flight it's a miracle that you didn't actually puke. My intro flight I had the 'bag' in my hand the whole time, I didn't fill it, but I sure felt like I was going to. Your body just needs time to get used to moving in three dimensions.

Hell, I got sick driving across the salt flats on a hazy day.

A few more flights and you'll have the confidence to not even worry about this kind of stuff.

Don't even sweat it. My first 10 flights had to be less than .5 because I couldn't go much longer without getting sick!! And it even happens later on.

In 2001, at the reagional SAFECON, I flew the Navigation event. HORRIBLE TURBULENCE!!! I found out that Jeppesen Flight Bags don't leak...

Perfectly Normal Brian...

I didn't get sick on any of my private flights, but my first full lesson unser the hood for my instrument was another story... When we got down, I was dizzy and had a severe headache and was nausious (-2 sp) and had to go lay down for a while in the pilot lounge...

but after that one time it went away... so don't sweat it!

Just wait until you do steep turns, Brian. Especially if you're hung over!

No, seriously, you're just not used to the motion and the view. You may have flown commercially before, but it's an entirely different kind of flying. All together now!

I'd say my most nauseating (spell check anyone?

) moment is probably while executing any sort of turns especially sharp climbing turns, I have a terrible habit of staring at the instruments which causes me to have some temporary spacial disorentation It's never anything too bad but enough to make me a little woozy. Surprisingly I really wasn't too bothered by my power-off stalls the other day, there was a slight whooop sensation but not really substantial i felt less of a whooop when I was at the controls doing the next one. Anyways I too am at the beginning stages of my PPL training Brian and yes there is a few moments of queezyness but you do get used to it, try looking out the window when this happens and taking a few calm deep breaths and you will be fine. Happy Flying!

The only time I ever puked in a plane was when I was on some pain meds after my hair transplant surgery and never should have been flying in the first place.....man, that Captain was pissed....guess that was more than you needed to know.

Anyhow...I do Young Eagles flights and have taken many a kid up on their first flight. It's quite common for folks on their first ride to feel airsick. I remember back when I was a youngin' and feeling that way on my first few flights....don't worry about it.

HAHA....what a lousy result that was. I'll say the Lasik surgery was the best 2K I ever spent and the hair transplant was the worst 2K. I'm too old to care now and just wear a hat....what's really funny is I still get carded every now and then if I'm wearing my ball cap...gotta love that.....

First off, Congrats on your first time!

I'm also a Student Pilot working on my PPL. On my introduction flight I didn't feel airsick. But I had this stupid shake thing going. Doing the pre-flight my leg was shaking. Then I started to get this "bubblegut" or butterflies in my stomach. And when I sat in the left seat my leg was still shaking. My instructor asked "Are you cold?" LOL. Once we started the engine, my leg stopped shaking and my stomach felt better. I took a few deep breaths and was ready for my first time doing what I've always wanted to do!

So I guess whether it's airsick, excitement or if you are just nervous, each and everyone of us will remember our first flight! Congrats again man, and now you'll be hooked on flying and begging Mom to take more flight lessons! (like me)
