This may not be a big deal, but it was flippin awesome. I learned so much tonight! The biggest thing was when I was flying in AUS and SAT and seeing the bigger planes all around me, I realized that I was doing something I loved doing. It was the best sense of accomplishment. I really will take all this stuff with me through my CFI days and hopefully the 121 world. It really felt good to know that my instructor wanted me to learn. He wanted me to succeed and that motivates me to become a great CFI when my time comes and give back to the flying community. Sorry for the rant. lol This one goes out to all the CFI's who enjoy seeing their student's learn and to all the students who are going through the long journey to whatever flying you want to do.

Congrats! The best part of night flying is if you don't like what you see just turn the landing light off :D

IT is very peaceful up there at night. I turned the landing light off a couple of times lol hahaha. Could I do the rest of my training at nihgt or is there some reg that says it must be during the day?

Matt-

I love night flying, especially in the Bay Area where there are so many lights and such awesome reflections on the water. I try to do it every chance I get.

Night flying is the best. If you're not on flight following or in a busy airspace area, just turn the radios off and enjoy the complete (well, except for the 100+ hp engine) silence of the night. So peaceful. :)

One thing that surprised me was that I thought I would see the airports alot better from farther away.

That was actually one of my biggest surprises as a student pilot. At night it can actually be very difficult to see airports, especially if you're flying in highly populated areas.

I learned out of LGB and I'm still convinced that someone who doesn't know where it is would have one hell of a time seeing it at night, and it's quite big, too.

Im still hyped up about everything this morning lol. I really want to just do the est of my flights at night.

7 years later and night is still my favorite time to fly.

As for training at night...beyond your private you can with relative ease. I did the majority of my training at night. The only issue with the private is that alot of it is maneuvers and ground reference maneuvers and cross countries that just need to be done during the day.

Once you hit your instrument you can do every hour of it at night (although you wont notice because your hood will be on.) During your commercial the maneuvers during the day will be alot easier than at night but other than that alot of it can be done at night as well.

I am excited for my IFR training. AFter I finish my ppl and get my IFR ticket, I jsut want to fly IFR and thats it. Real flying!

Grats! I always loved night flying, especially when I was a kid. My dad had a cherokee 6 and with all the red lights in the interior it reminded me of a Klingon Bird of Prey. Yes I am a nerd.

After my first night flight a few years ago, I too realized this is exactly what I want to do with my life. So here I am, the big shot CFI giving the experiences back. Enjoy the journey!

Just to the left of SLI. Ask for the Practice ILS on 124.65 and they'll point you right to it :)

Word. Another thing...they are so much closer than they appear. One of my first XC flights, I damn near overflew my airport because I was looking at one about 30 miles farther away!!!
