I just got my first flying job. It's in a Cessna 421 owned by a real estate company. The plane is based in Napa, CA, a whopping 25 minutes from my home town. They fly to LA, Scottsdale, Vegas and mostly San Felipe, Mexico. It's a two pilot crew, and I'll be in the right seat but they also want me to get some experience in the left.
I've had my eye on this job since last July, when I was finishing up my private. On one of my lessons, my instructor asked if we could stop and check out an airplane he might get a job in. I met the person who was managing it, and saw my instructor get hired. I flew once with the manager in his Aztec before I even had my private and he said to go get my ratings so he could hire me. Ever since then this job has been my motivator. It was a complete case of right place, right time, and making a good impression. After I got my commercial, I was told I couldn't actually be hired because of some insurance problems. I was able to work it out, if I had just taken the no I wouldn't have the job.
