FFDO (federal flight deck officer)

I'm surprised they posted this. The TSA hasn't been a big fan of this program. It took a Congressional bill specifically ordering them to start the program. Even now they are trying their damnest to sink the program. However, there is another bill pending that dictates how the program is supposed to be run.

I have seen this job posted several times, one of the MD80 instructors that I used to work with applied for this program some time ago.

I flew with an FFDO a few weekas ago, and apart from a couple of inconvenices (of which I'm not going to discuss on a public forum), he seems like he's pretty happy with the program after getting thru all of the hubris of getting approved.

Do they really make him go through the normal screening to make sure he doesn't have any weapons before they hand him his gun back?

Does he get to cut in line at Chik-Fil-A in the terminal?

Since they're federal officers carrying a weapon and an ID, they are able to bypass passenger screening.

This is a no BS story, few months ago I flew an Army Officer ( on a Military flight ) who told me that just a few days prior while going through security at a civilian airport he had his nail clippers confiscated while they handed his 9mm back to him. When he approached the TSA he identified himself as a CID ( Criminal Investigator ) whith the US Army and as such was properly credentialed and carring a concealed weapon. There were no glitches going through security untill a TSA Agent found a pair of nail clippers in his carry on, she advised him that she was confiscating them as they were a weapon and were not allowed on board. Go figure.

I didn't think nail clippers were still on the TSA's No-No list. When I was still flying I used to carry a hard printed copy of the most recently updated list, so if a TSA agent tried to confiscate something I knew was an allowed item, I had documentation to prove myself.

nail clippers aren't on the list anymore... but if they're the nail clippers that look like tiny scissors, they're probably not allowed because they look like scissors...
