Feelings between Delta pilots and F/As ?

Taken from an airlines.net forum post:

Interestingly enough about the DL F/As, I flew ATL-TLH a couple of weeks ago. The initial welcome-aboard announcement went something like: "On behalf of your overpaid pilots and your underpaid flight attendants, welcome aboard Delta, a SkyTeam member..."

Several people -- including me -- chuckled at that one. But seriously, I get the sense the F/As resent the pilots somewhat.

Does that kind of sentiment really exist, or did I just make another mistake of believing an airliners.net post?

No offense to F/A's, but did they spend anywhere from $40,000 - $100,000 for their training?

Do they have to have recurrent every six months?

Do they have to have a medical exam every six months?

While F/A's are a crucial and highly important crew member on any flight, I believe it's apples to oranges.

I know they go through recurrent training every year, not sure if they have to go through medical every year or two, but they do have some requirements.

Having said that, they paid nothing for their training. My mom's an f/a and she loves it (well, she loved it pre-9/11). She is always griping about pilots and their egos, etc. and I give her my thoughts on it...thrifty pilots (read: cheap), well as a flight instructor, you're damned skippy I'm cheap and I'm sure this will be engrained in me for the rest of my life; attitude, deal with the crap we've dealt with throughout our training, etc. and you get a little attitude.

I could go on, but you get the drift. You are right, it is apples and oranges, but they do go through recurrent and deal with medical issues just like us...just don't have as many dues to pay as we do. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bandit.gif

Some (and that is a very few some) FAs have no clue how pilots go about becoming pilots. They think that pilots show up and interview like they do, not needing any prior experience and the company just trains them to be pilots in 6 weeks. They don't have any understanding of the time, money & ambition required to get to the cockpit of a major airline.

These FAs genuinly don't understand "why on earth those pilots are paid so much more than us". Never mind that those 'overpaid' pilots have offered to give 23% of their pay rate, and also numerous work rule & benefit givebacks. The company is the one being stubborn & greedy here!

It makes me very angry to see behavior like this exhibited by a work group who should take the time to actually talk to the pilots they work with, and find out more about what they do & how they got to be where they are. I flew with a few FAs like this at AA, and I did my best to 'educate' them as to the way things really are. Sometimes I got through to them, sometimes I didn't. Again though, this is a very, very small number of FAs, for the most part they see the games going on right now, and recognize it for what it is.

Reading that anet thread irritated me in another way too, those frequent fliers who were more concerned with "what's going to happen to my frequent flier miles if Delta goes under?!" Wah, cry me the freakin' Nile you selfish prick! Think of the employees who's very living is at stake here! They're worried about what's going to happen to their precious MILES /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif.

Cool. I assumed F/A's had to go through some sort of recurrent. Like I said, not taking away from the F/A's plight. They are VERY important to the safety of each airline flight.

I was pointing out that pilots requirements are a bit more stringent.

Much love for F/A's!!!

Aside from the 6 weeks part, isn't that kind of how it works in some Asian/European countries? I was reading the other day that pilots in Singapore can apply for a job with Singapore Airlines with zero flight time and get trained all the way to jets like the 777! Does anyone think that kind of system would ever work here? Would anyone rather have that kind of system?

WHEW! Thought I'd piss you off with my response. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Glad you saw where I was going.

Probably the most telling remark would be when one of my friends was talking to a flight attendant during a break in training. The conversation went a little something like this.

FA: "How long do ya'll gotta be here for training?"

Pilot: "About eight weeks for new hires."

FA: "That's it? You mean that I could have spent two more weeks of training and been a pilot? How come nobody told me that?"

There are "bad apples" in the pilot ranks and in the flight attendant ranks and unfortunatley, you spend your entire career paying the piper.

Or how about the one that someone -- think it may have been you -- told about benefit negotiations.

"Negotiate hard -- we want those benefits, too."

"Well, you know, you guys could unionize and get those on your own."

"No, unions are BAD!" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

If I had a nickle for every time I heard that exchange, I'd be sitting streetside in a Parisian cafe with a croissant and a cafe au lait watching the American tourists step in poo.

Nope! No hurt feelings here /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Maybe I just have a unique perspective (being a FA for so long, being a pilot myself, and being married to an airline pilot). Pilots' lives and FAs' lives are very similar lifestyle-wise, but the jobs are very different.

Interesting, I move the post out of "The Lavatory" and it dies. Straaaaaange.

Maybe there's a way to introduce the PFT debate or some politics in there somewhere............. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I just thought it'd be interesting for non-registered users to see the 'disconnect' both sides of the locking (well, for the most part) cockpit door see one another.

I guess moving the post out of "The Lavatory" had the resulting effect of someone's mom walking in during a porn or something.

Everyone just kinda loses interest. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well it seems that a lot of single pilots, and single FAs know each other very well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif I think those cover it all!!!

Edited: /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif needed to be added - but only if they are lucky!
