FBO vs. Collegiate Aviation

Flight training at an FBO, while getting a degree in non-aviation.

OR

Aviation degree in college.

An explanation would be nice.

Collegiate, you can write all of your flying off on your taxes so its even cheaper.

Option number one all the way. Its all about diversity my friend, and always having a back-up plan. ;)

I myself cannot say the same. I found college extremely boring with the exception of the ladies, but unfortunately that never got me credits. So I found out my college had an aviation program and made the switch which I kinda regret (kinda because regret is a strong word). That decision will end up costing me more time and money to get a degree, which actually broadens my career options.

If your goal is the majors, they will take almost any bachelors degree, on the flip side, a large number of jobs will not accept an aviation degree.

You can major in art and do a FBO and save thousands. Compared to majoring in aviation and flying at the same time.

that is just tuition, tack on more for flight training.

Just don't do $50,000 worth of college loans, followed by another $50,000 worth of flight training loans.

warning part 141 schools have ways to suck money out of you. But I have no idea what that school is like. I just had a bad experience with mine in the past.

That depends-
Many colleges have flight programs that farm out the flight training to FBOs.
So you have both worlds in one. (These colleges are typically much more reasonable in price)

Go to a real college, then get your ratings at a part 61 FBO. Pay as you go. Minimize loans.

Don't rush to get your ratings finished, but enjoy every hour. Remember, it's a journey not a destination.

That's my take on it, and, of course, YMMV.

I'd do this.

Bust a medical, get furloughed, get merged and flushed out of the bottom end of a seniority list like a nugget of corn three days after you've eaten it, well if you chose well, you'll have a great backup.

I've got an aviation degree and 15 years of professional aviation experience which doesn't really do a whole heck of a lot if I can't keep a medical or the "new" Delta furloughed 7000 pilots.

Go to a fun college (non aviation) and do your flying on the side. It will be fun. Enjoy it all.

PS, when I first came to JetCareers I was way pro college aviation. Didn't bother listening to the anti college avit people, but I did the college thing for awhile and it ended up that I didn't like it. Went back to the FBO way of things and it's fun.

Do both. Find a Community College with an aviation degree, do it, and then do your four year in business or something like that. A lot of CCs and staet universities have bridge programs very similar to that. I plan on going back to my CC (Community College of Beaver County) after I graduate next year from my four year school (Penn State) because it has heavily subsidized flight training; I'll pay around $15,000-$20,000 (I think it was) for all my ratings there versus $35,000k+ at an FBO or flight school...
