Far 61.183?

Can anyone tell me where the FAR is that states that the initial CFI must be done (or portion of it done) in a complex aircraft? I know I have come across it before just can't seem to find it anywhere now.

I haven't seen anything in the FARs, but:

-The CFI PTS says that the aircraft must be capable of performing all the required tasks.
-The CFI PTS says that the applicant must be able to perform all the tasks to a commercial pilot standard.
-The Commercial PTS says that a complex aircraft must be used for takeoffs and landings.

Thus, since you have to do the commercial takeoffs and landings in a complex aircraft, and the CFI applicant must be able to teach to that standard, a complex aircraft must be used for the CFI checkride.

Though there might be a shorter/simpler way of arriving at that conclusion.

It is only a checkride requirement (PTS). Not a regulation.

It may have been in 61.45 once upon a time

MidlifeFlyer - An update, folks. I asked the FAA about the missing complex airplane for the takeoff and landing tasks in the CFI PTS. The response from AFS 630 below:

You are correct in your assumption that the requirement for a complex airplane was left out during the last change. I would like to clarify that the omission was inadvertent and will be corrected during the next revision, which will occur shortly. In the mean time, I must emphasize that it is still FAA policy that a complex airplane is required.

And this is what caused the confusion for me...Thanks!

Flight tests are covered in 61.39, and the Required aircraft and equipment are covered in 61.45. These regs are generic and do not specify maneuvers or specific equipment. That specification is deferred to the PTS in the opening statement of 61.33 & .43; Tests: General procedure.

FARs dont say anything because you can still use any aircraft you want for the CFI maneuvers. You only need the complex for landings and takeoffs. I know many people who used a C172 or PA28 for the maneuvers and then flew with a complex in the pattern for touch and goes. Personally i think its much better to use the complex for everything.

Oh, I know but personally I was hoping that I would do the whole thing in a C-152 which I think is much cheaper and much less a pain in the ass. This is half the battle for the CFI IMHO.

Correction, it was the current PTS over the internet at FAA.gov some time ago and not the FARs that I came across this error.
