fair dinkum

In my short and useless literary career I have discovered:

"Fair Dinkum Thinkum"

An expression made famous by Robert Heinlein in his novel, "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress."

Manny, the protagonist, calls the intelligent thinking computer, Mycroft Holmes, a "fair dinkum thinkum." I am told it is a play on words of a Russian and English phrase combined.

ahhh. You know I have only read one of Heinlein's books. I wasn't really into it so I never read anymore.

I am an authority on the subject since I worked at Outback Steakhouse my senior year in college...

Fair Dinkum means a fair or large quantity in terms of portion size.

"try our Alice Springs chicken, it's a fair dinkum, mate" I never said that...it's on the menu.

Fair Dinkum - is basically like saying 'are you serious'

In use:

Person one - 'And this car went from 0-60 in 3 seconds'

Person two - 'Fair Dinkum'

Person one - I ain't [expletive deleted] ing yea

(You need the swear word in there coming from AU)

haha People who work at outback know barely more than the average american when it comes to Australia, which is hardly anything at all other than it's some large country in the southern hemisphere with kangaroos. Least most of the europeans I've spoke to here knew Sydney wasn't the capital!
Sheesh!

True that - when I was at Outback a while ago I asked I asked the girl who was serving us who John Howard was, what was the capital of Australia, etc. She could not even name one state.

din·kum ( P ) Pronunciation Key (dnkm) Australian

adj.
Genuine; real.

adv.
Honestly; truly.

So it's like saying, 'are you telling the truth?' or 'I'm telling the truth, it can be used as a statement or a question.

Although it's an expression rarely heard by 'urban' types
