I was just wondering what is the facial hair policy for part 121 operator pilots in United States? Is there an sepecific FAA rule that prohibits this? Are pilots allowed to have well groomed gotess or moustaches?

LOL, I hope I don't have to worry about that since at 24 I still don't have facial hair... kinda sucks, but I guess it's good at the same time - no hair to shave every morning.

So, a Priest, a Bishop and a goat walked into a preschool . . .

Mustaches allowed, but no beards.

I believe it's to ensure that the oxygen mask fits & seals securely to the face.

It is not so much the fit - it is the fact that grease from a beard, and O2 can combust - not really a good thing!!

Michelle - you can't grow a mustache - it would not look good on you!

I saw a male MD-11 FO wearing a earing. Is that allowed?

Entirely company policy.

Is it against the FAR's or is it just a company rule? I have a beard and I don't want to shave it off.

I just skimmed the 121s and I couldn't find any specific mention of facial hair. However, every 121 carrier I know of does not allow for cockpit crewmembers to have a beard. Period. If you go to an interview with a beard, they'll probably ask if you're willing to shave it. If you say no, don't expect a call.

For the longest time male Eagle F/As were not allowed any beards of any kind either, because of one type of oxygen mask on a cabin crew oxygen bottle. I think I remember that rule being changed once Eagle switched those oxygen bottles to a variety that used a different design of mask. This was the cabin crew's oxygen bottle though, very different from the cockpit oxygen supply system.

Pure O2 and any grease, or petroleum-based product is not a good mix. Lip balm, makeup, etc. read the label and be careful!

On facial hair. Staches are allowed, every pilot should have one,

but no goats or beards. I did see a JetBlue pilot with a goatee jumpseating on one of our flights. He was in uniform so...

. Perhaps exemptions are granted for certain skin conditions.

I don't like wearing a tie or long pants, either.

the FSDO made me shave off my goatee to go into the high altitude chamber...it suprises me that there is not a reg prohibiting facial hair on all commercial flights with oxygen requirements.
