FAA written tests before computers

... How did you do it?? Flight schools carry paper tests and send them in to OK City via snail mail or what?

One old timer told me that he was using a test prep school in the 50's or so that was above the FSDO. Written exams by hand and turned them in to the FSDO. Turns out the school was burglarizing the FSDO and getting the tests at night.

The only one I took before computer testing (CATS) was my private written. Took it an an "official" FAA testing center with a proctor staring at me the whole time. They sent it in, and I got the result in the mail a month or so later.

My father tells me he took his comm and CFI written tests on the same day at EWR's old "terminal 1". They were pen and paper given by the FAA.

I remember having to drive to the Spokane FSDO in the late 70's to take my PPL. This was before proctored exams were available at CWU in Ellensburg. I remember sitting in a room by myself at a big table and the room was all windows, allowing the FSDO guys to keep an eye on you lest you try to cheat. You were given a binder that was the written test bank and were given a computer printout of the random question numbers you had to answer. I was like 16 and had driven all the way from Wenatchee to take the test, so it was a little intimidating.

I do remember ASA had a written test guide you could buy that was an approximation of the FAA's test bank. That was a huge help in knowing what to study.
