FAA to fine Chicago?

Maybe this was posted maybe not.. i was on AOPA's website just now during some much needed downtime and saw the article about the aopa pushing for the faa to fine them for illegaly tearing down meigs anyone have any other news about this? i hope this is true maybe it'll teach them politicians a lesson

Dictator (er Mayor) Daley ought to be personally fined & held individually responsible for the destruction of Megis.

If he used ORD funds to destroy Meigs, I hope his sorry @ss gets nailed to the wall.

The man needs to seek professional counseling to deal with his fear of aviation.

I was in Chicago over the weekend and stopped by Meigs field (RIP) to pay my respects. It's hardly noticible that there was ever an airport there. All that remains is an abandoned control tower sticking out of a large patch of grass. Very sad.

Look at it from a Gamer's Perspective.

At least you can still fly it on Flight Simulator.

Simulation? I wish I could send Mayor Daley a 'simulation' of what a Ryder truck full of explosives blowing up right in front of City Hall would be like. He destroyed Meigs because security concerns? HA! If he wants the city to be 100% 'secure', there should be no traffic, no truck rentals, no people, no airline service in the entire Chicagoland area. Why doesn't he just hole up in a bunker somewhere if he's so paranoid.

I think we should all sneak in there at night and carve the crap out of his driveway and say it was because we dont think he's a safe enough driver. What an ass.

I love it!! Great idea!

Have you ever noticed how anxious he gets when questioned about Megis? The pitch of his voice rises, he gets really jittery, he seems genuienly scared. I think he has a serious phobia about aviation/airplanes. Sadly he used his 'power' to pander to his phobia and destroy a valuable asset to our city.

Yeah, what he did really makes no sense. Everybody saw what happened when that kid flew his 172 into a building in florida. It broke a window and started a really small fire. And as crazy busy as the chicago area airports are, they really didn't need there to be one less airport. I was planning on flying there during my multi engine training before he closed it :-(

What an idiot. He should be taken out of his position for having done that. What if there were airplanes going there to land?

I heard about this on the news. They are fining the city $30,000.00 They are also looking into whether or not city or airport funds were used improperly to destory the airport.

I think the 30k is a ridiculous amount. That is money that he could write out of a personal check and never even notice the difference.

At the time this happend. It was rumored that the faa, or somebody, was going to take the money that was going to be used to remodle o'hare and use it to fix Miegs. But as rumors go, they usually arent true.

Im just curious on the amount of money it took to tare down the rest of the airport. Probly more to fix it.

Its rediculous that he's getting away with this.

Here's a little more information from AvWeb:

The city of Chicago (in particular, its taxpayers) could face fines approaching $5 million for its midnight assault on Meigs Field 18 months ago. The FAA announced Friday it's proposing the city be fined $33,000 (the maximum) for failing to provide 30 days notice of the closure. The agency also said it was launching an investigation into whether $1.5 million in federal funds that were supposed to be spent on development of O'Hare International were diverted to pay the contractor hired to tear up Meigs. If it's true, the penalty could reach as high as $4.5 million.

There's more here.

I hate to point this out, but Mayor is an elected position. At least where I live...

In the grand scheme of things, $4.5 million really isn't that much to the city of Chicago. To us, that's a lot of money: to Daley and friends, it's an inconvenience until the commercial development that is certainly planned for that real estate comes into fruition. If there is no high rise condo building built on the site of Meigs, there will be one built somewhere else that coud have been or is currently a park ("Since the city of Chicago has all this new park land here, we don't need this park here...")

No doubt about it, there is something afoot to line the pockets of the Daley corporation. Perhaps the plans are delayed while the flak dies down over Meigs, but someday, somewhere in Chicago, someone that is close to Daley will make money off of the closure of Meigs.

I hope that Phil Boyer finds a way to nail Daley for being a lying scumbag.
