FAA Shift Work and Schedules.

One more question which I did not see covered here, if you are a new CPC with Tuesday and Wednesday off for example, and 4th of July, Christmas or some holiday in on Wednesday, would you still be off for ot, or if many more senior people who usually work Wednesday but requested it off would cause you to be bumped and work on the holiday?
 
One correction to seniority. A military guy will not necessarily be first. If they did not go to basics, then your FAA start date would be sooner which trumps military time(assuming you did basics).

There is one guy that started on the same date as me and is below me on seniority for this very reason.

Also the date you start seniority is not necessarily your report date. If you take the 64 hours of admin leave, your seniority date will still begin the day after you graduate from the academy.
 
yeah there were a few CTI and VRA people in my class too and they tried to convince NATCA they should be senior to the OTS people in their classs... but it didn't work... because we all went to basics and had 1 month of additional time with the FAA over them. They weren't too happy...
 
When my husband graduated from OKC and moved to his facility they said that the seniority was not based on start date in OKC, it was based on graduation from OKC. Otherwise CTI that didn't take basic would be put behind in seniority the OTS that started 4-5 weeks earlier but Graduate and get to the facility after them. This could just be his facilities way of dealing with seniority among the CTI non-basic/OTS basic people.

Also - at my husband's facility the controllers do have flight benefits. Their families don't but they can fly 1 time a month on what they call, "orientation flight"...basically they get to fly stand-by once a month. Not sure many do it though.
 
The way I understood it was the first method of determining your seniority at your facility is the day you become a bargaining unit member (first day at your facility). If there are multiple people with the same report date (at the facility) prior federal service trumps those without it. So those who went to basics have prior federal service compared to those who did not go to basics. It's the same as if you have someone in your class from TSA or what ever, they will go ahead of everyone else.

Each facility does it different, but I was told the above method is the standard method and used in most facilities.
 
Since I've got to my facility I've been surprised to see how much variation there is in schedules. It seems individual areas have a lot of say in how their schedules work out. Some people work all afternoons, some people work 4 ten hour shifts per week, one guy has it so he has 6 consecutive days off every month.

"You will not be allowed to leave the facility for lunch without taking annual leave"

We are allowed to leave the facility for lunch without taking leave. You can run to get food anywhere that is close enough that will still allow you time to eat within your break time.

We are NOW allowed to leave the facility for lunch. When this thread was written your couldn't, we didn't get that back until Oct of 09, or later, when ever the contract got ratified.
