FAA "Accepted" versus "Approved"

Hi all,

What do these terms mean to you? What are the major differences between an accepted document and an approved document?

Thanks!

Accepted would mean something that they are willing to take possession of and approved would be something that they will sign off or give the green light to. Just my thoughts.

Our Operating Handbook (how the plane gets flown, checklists etc) is approved. The FAA (well, the POI that signed off on it) is in concurrence that this is how he would do things if he was in charge. Or Flight Ops Manual (how the airline operates things such as security procedures, crew checkins, uniforms etc) is accepted by the FAA that they are ok with how we do things.

I don't think they can take enforcement action against a breach of something in the accepted manuals (although the company can certainly discipline for it) where as they can enforce violations of approved materials violations.

In my experience Approved data is much more specific than Accepted data. When performing maintenance the maintenance manual that is specific to that airframe is approved data, but AC43.13 which has tons of general information to be used on aircraft in general is only considered accepted data. If I remember correctly having accepted data may require more paperwork such as a 337 form.
