FA Survives 33,000\' Fall to Earth

On 26 January 1972, a JAT DC-9 en route from Copenhagen to Zagreb and Belgrade exploded 33,000 feet over Srbska-Kamenice in Czechoslovakia. Ustashe, otherwise known as the Croatian National Movement, later admitted their responsibility for the bombing that should have killed all 29 passengers and crew. Miraculously, however, there was a survivor. The body of flight attendant, Vesna Vulovic, was recovered from the wreckage. Thirty years on, Philip Baum travelled to Belgrade to hear her story.

Re: FA Survives 33,000\' Fall to Earth

I think I read this story before but I remember something about the impact was on the side of a mountian or hill which lessend the blow. You know like those skiiers that jump a hundred feet and survive because they land on a slope.

Pretty amazing stuff. I also read a book about one of the Army's Golden Knights parachute team that survived a fall similar to this one back in the early 80s.

You may survive but do you really want to? Its not like you can get up say "damn that hurt" and walk away from it.

I would think that the lack of air pressure at 33,000 feet would have killed her before the impact would have had a chance.

There are a lot of variables to consider, but to keep it short and sweet, the TUC (Time of Useful Consciousness) (I would think) would be very brief, but with a rapid depressurization as was undoubtedly experienced with the explosion, it was most likely lights out immediately.

It's my understanding that it is possible to lose consiousness at a high altitude, then regain consiousness as you descend. Not sure I'd want to though.

Hope that helped.
