Is it true that the F-14 will soon begin to get phased out as grumman (now northop grumman) no longer makes them and the new F-18 models are replacing them? I also went to the naval fighter weapons training school and noticed they are using mostly if not only F-18s. Does anyone have any information on this?

Yep, the F14 is being phased out, the Navy is also introducing and enhanced version of the F18, "The Super Hornet". Basically it is a stretched F18 Hornet with more powerful engines. I think the F18 will also assume more of the duties from the A6.

Yeah, I heard of a E/A-18 which is configured for eletronic warfare.

I was saddend to see them go. They were my favorite military airplane. Oh well, out with the old in with newer better things I guess.

The F-18 is really bad A!@ too, It is becoming my new favorite.

The closest I've gotten to being in the Navy is watching Navy SEAL training on the discovery channel, but from what I've heard and read the Super Hornet is the Navy's plane of the near future.

The F14s were awesome in the movie TopGun

Yeah, the F14s were phenomenal in Top Gun. Hard to imagine them getting the heave-ho. Does anyone know why, is it cheaper to maintain super hornets, are they more of a multi role fighter, inquiring minds wanna know?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!!?!?!?!!??!?

Wait, I thought the JSF was supposed to be the plane for all the different branches of the military? Am I wrong here?

There's nothing that the F-14 can do that the Hornet can't!!

The Hornet, on the other hand, is a true multi-role aircraft with much newer - and more capable - technology.

If the F18 has more technology then why not why just upgrade the technology in the F14?

That's just putting a bow tie on a pig. She's had her day now it's time to step aside.

No you are right. It will be used throughout the branches, but it will not be the only fighter/strike aircraft. The F-18 and F-22/15 will still be highyl used. The JSF is a replacement for the 16 as a multi role, cheap(considering price if 22 or 18) aircraft.

DTA is exactly right!! When your computer is gone to •!, you can only upgrade it so much before you have to get a new one! When your car starts breaking down, how many times do you replace the transmission before you're better of buying a new one?

It is sad to see these beauties go but as we've seen from the past it is only for the best. People hated to see the B-25 and the B-17 go. But now we have the B-2 and the B-1 which are awesome and do a great job.

Just remember the F14 is flying around with Vietnam age technology, must be getting hard to keep the old gal flying. Would cost plenty of money to modernize the F14's, better to go with the F18, since the F18 will also replace the A6. They can save $$$$$ in spare parts will replacing "2" ancient airplanes, now, don't me wrong, the F14 is my favorite airplane, but it time for her to go.

Actually, the latest F-14D has pretty advanced avionics. The main reason they are getting rid of the F-14 is becasue they are too hard to maintain. I cannot remember how many man hours on the ground there are for every hour of flight time but its higher then the F/A-18. With the best crew in the world, taking one engine out, service, and replacement takes about 24 hours. That is with the best crew in the world. The Hornet is more mechanic friendly. It takes about 8 hours for them to service both engines. Its just that much easier to work on.

The F-14 has been used in a variety of roles. It is quite capable too. Their gound attack capabilities are on par with the Hornets. They are excellent recon platforms, and they are incridible interceptors. Pure interceptions is where the Hornet cannot match the Tomcat. However, it is true that the F-14 is not as maneuverable as the F/A-18.

The Tomcat is my favorite aircraft if anyone can tell....

At the time of it's birth, yes.

It's alot more complicated than that, bud. The F-14 is a fighter, hence the F-14. The F/A-18 was designed from the ground up as a dual-role aircraft, capable of both aerial combat and ground attack. The F-14 CAN fill an attack role, just as an A-4 Skyhawk CAN dogfight. However, the F/A-18 can do both without a problem.

You don't really Service turbine engines....did you mean replace them??
