Quick question about the eye portion of a FAA medical examination. I understand most of the vision tests, but what about the one where you are asked what number a floating line is passing through. Zero is the correct answer. There is a vertical test and a horizontal one. What’s the name of that test and what is it testing?

The test is a fusion test, looking for phorias. Basically misalignments of the two eyes that can cause double vision, particularly when tried, hypoxic, affected by meds, etc. The test you took presents two dissimilar images (Line and number). Because they are dissimilar your brain feels no need to merge (fuse) them into one image so the true misalignment of the eyes is measured.
