Exploring Options

I'm currently a military pilot, with a few years to make a decision on whether or not to stay in or look for other employment. If I choose to leave, I'll have a little over 1000 hours of multi-engine time and probably around 2000 hours total, as the military records it. My multi-engine time is in the P-3 and T-44, so turboprop.

When looking at many of the expat F/O jobs I see posted online, I see that they're asking for commercial jet/turbojet/jet air transport time, sometimes even time in type. The numbers seem daunting at the moment, being between 500-1000 hours. While I don't really see a problem in paying for a type rating (which frequently isn't required), my experience doesn't quite meet time in T/M/S. Since these are minimum requirements, should I look elsewhere, or do airlines look at military experience differently?

Thanks for the help.
