Expired Student/Medical

I have a student who soloed ten years ago and is looking to get back in to flying. So his student/medical is obviously expired. Can I just send him off to an AME and get a new one, or will the FAA be like "hey we already have this guy with a student/medical cert with this number ######?"

Just send him down to the local AME and get a new one. I had two before I got my PPL and there are people I know who have had more student/medical certs.
