Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone has any insight on any examiners in the Northern New Jersey area. I may be doing one of my final add on check rides up at Caldwell, but not sure yet. Any advice on who I should try to get?

Try to get Bob Broadwater. You'll need to pick him up at The Flying W.

Never flew with him but he is a legend in NJ...great guy and very fair. Sounds like a good option. I think he flies a 73 for CAL right?

On the other hand i flew with Joe Miller...he is something else. Great guy, from the first second he makes you feel very confident and not only will you take a ride, but learn a lot from him...really fair guy.

I disagree with the first to recommendations of Broadwater. He is a joke and fails to recognize what is legal and what is not with regard to the FARs.

Broadwater thinks he is God and what he speaks is the gospel. Far from it. Listening to him rant instead of actually testing an applicant is what he thinks his job is.

Now I couldn't speak more highliy of Joe Miller. He actually tests applicants, is fair and a hell of a good guy. My 2 cents is to go with Joe.

All I can say is from my personal experience, and Broadwater was fair, and not preachy. Out of the DPE's I have flown with in NJ, he is the best. I have never met Joe Miller so I cannot comment on him.

Kind of describes at least half of the DPEs I've encountered :)

Unfortunately, I agree with this assessment. I flew my Private checkride with Broadwater in 2001, and passed on first effort - so no sour grapes. Although the flight portion was fair and thorough as far as I can remember, I distinctly recall being profoundly surprised and disappointed by the oral portion. I'll just leave it at that.
