Ethics and Aviation

I'm curious to what you guys and girls consider ethical and unethical in aviation. I'd like to hear about some things that are in fact legal for you to do, however, you wouldn't because of an ethical/moral issue, even though the hypothetical action would be legal.

hope that doesn't sound to crazy.

This could spiral out of control.

From a pure standpoint, if you follow the regs to the letter, everything is ethical. Other than an emergency is it ever ethical to deviate from the regs? I would argue yes.

I think big academy advertising, such as can be found at big academy websites and flight training mag, is unethical. In fact, I find the selling of this career to be unethical, at the root core.

I'm so friggen hard core that I see flight instruction as more of an art form than "just a way to become an airline pilot".

I know I'm pretty left of center on some things. Heck, I think it's wrong to have banner ads at JC. But, I'm old skool. And that's how it was back in the day...

A pilot's number one concern is his plane's safety. Just like a doctor's number one concern is his patient's health, or a lawyer's number one concern is his client's legal situation. Any pilot who does something that compromises his plane's safety is, in my mind, on the same level as a doctor prescribing more drugs to an addict, or a defence lawyer acting in cahoots with a DA.

I'm with DE727UPS.

I've seen too many bad instructors who just don't care, and the academy environment doesn't just let them get away with it, it encorages it. The academies care less about quality of training than they do about listing every instructor or student ever hired anywhere.

:yeahthat:

big U ads are like a used car salesman selling a lemon. Its all misdirection. Unfortunately every flight instructor I know that was CFIing to go to the regionals was a BAD CFI.

While there is a TON of unethicals (IMO) on the company side, but what is the thought of a person going to an airline just for the type rating and then leaving for another?

It was mentioned in a thread about people going to CAL to get the 737 type and then jumping to SWA. I don't like that SWA doesn't pay for the type rating, and I don't think it actually is that professional for a pilot to do the same.

Large number of FBO CFIs out there taking their students for a ride...At a reputable flight academy that will not happen.

Thank you.

I disagree. IMHO the FBO instructors that are there to instruct tend to keep the client's best interest in mind. I agree that you will find a majority of instructors at a flight academy doing a good job. I think it helps because they have a standardized training curriculum. But, I also have seen the flight academy instructors with no interest in anything other than time building.

The bottom line is if you couldn't tell your mom about what you're about to do, don't do it.

Wait...that would just about end my sex life. Gonna have to rethink that one. :D

The latest unethical thing I've noticed: Skybus advertising service to places like SEA/YVR or BOS and really flying to BLI or Portsmouth.

That's purely bait and switch.

I believe....

that some pilot paychecks are unethical.

I believe....

that the "Skybus rules of flying" are unethical.
