ERJ-145

Any particular reason why you would say no?

I would have thought an aircraft like an ERJ-145 would have auto-throttles standard, or at least an option??

going out on a limb here:
The FADEC is a full engine monitoring system where as autothrottles just adjust themselves to maintain a certain airspeed or mach. FADEC: This system actually controls the power plant, providing it with the correct fuel, air and ignition ratios required for optimum performance with minimum fuel expenditure. With electronic fuel injection, the air to fuel ratio is delivered with much greater accuracy. This results in better fuel economy and much more equal power levels.

Why would it have autothrottles? It has FADEC - even better

FADEC and autothrottles are two completely different things. You can have one without the other.

Our B757/767/A300 have FADEC systems and autothrottles. I've been told some of our "classic" B747 have rudementry autothrottle systems but no FADEC.

Full Authority Digital Electronic Control.

Yes they are two different things. Basically the FADEC is the engine brain. Determines the power output for different wx conditions, phases of flight, what the other FADEC is doing etc etc etc...It Does not control a speed.

I dont want to go to deep here, but on the E145 we have a "detent" Where we advanced the thrust to the detent. On takeoff this detent is set at either reduced or "full" power takeoff (Plus you still have the ability to go to reserve). So we advanced to the detent. When we are ready for Climb power, we hit the climb button. The engines then go to Climb power. At Cruise we hit the cruise button. Thats how it works in a simple form. So in theory you shouldnt have to touch the Thrust levers until you are ready for descent. In the 145/135 you must pull back the TL 99% of the time at cruise or youll overspeed, so you still have to play the TL game to get it at your desired speed. THe 140 is a bit underpowered and with a Full boat alot of times you can leave it in the detent until descent.

We do have a Speed mode for the Autopilot for climbs and desents. It will postition the attitude of the airplane to get that airspeed. It works OK in the airplane w/AP on, but most use it when the AP/OFF and FD ON.
