How come in most Boeing jets (others?) there are those little white spirals in the center of each fan. Are they just there because they look real cool when you look at them spinning or do they serve another purpose?

Actually, they are there to calibrate how fast the fan is spinning. A trained mechanic can see the rpms by counting the number of revolutions of the "spinner" in a minute at idle and check that against factory limitations.
