Yes, the thread title is correct.

McKinley County Sheriffs Office deputies responded to a crash early Sunday morning after a suspected drunk driver went crashing into a medical helicopter and fire truck on Highway 566 near Gallup.

Deputies say a landing zone for a medical transport helicopter had been set up by the fire department for transport of a patient from a separate crash on Navajo route 1149, when the reported drunk driver went around the barricade on Highway 566 crashing into the helicopter and fire truck.

The DWI problem is so bad in this state that not even aircraft are safe.

Driving cross country I stopped in Gallop for dinner about 10:00 pm on a Friday night. Accidents everywhere, looked like a war zone. While I was in Burger King someone wrapped their pick-up around the light post out front.

So that's why there is approximately 2 million don't drink and drive signs on 550 between ABQ and Farmington. It all makes sense now.

When I saw the headline the first thing that popped into my head was "bet that was in NM...". I lived in NM for 14 years and have to say it, and especially that area, are horrible when it comes to drunk drivers....glad I got out.

No doubt there picking up another drunk driver.
That was my first thought too.

I'd drink (not drive) all the time too if I had to live in that godforsaken place
There are nice parts of NM. I was happy in the ABQ metro area.

What is it about NM that it has such a major impaired driving issue?
Oh, that's a topic for another discussion. It's a multifaceted problem to say the least.

I'm assuming the driver will face federal charges since the chopper was damaged. That may be the silver lining in this.

I'd say but you'd think I was a Trump supporter.
Seriously? Let's keep politics in the Lav where they belong.

My first 5 months flying freight were spent laying over in Gallup. Fun times, fun times...

Gotta love NM....It's home for me, but still...
Me too. When folks learn I'm moving to Colorado, after asking me why the next thing they mention is, "oh, you'll save so much on car insurance up there because of NM's DWI problem."

And folks, it's more than just a "rez" problem or a "wanna be cowboy" problem.
