Employed... again!!!!! (and a wedding anniversary too...)

ClearedForOption

Displaced... again.
Well, it's been 'official' for a couple of weeks, but since I am actually starting soon, I am very happy to announce that I am going to be employed as a pilot once again. (Third airline... I hope that third time's the charm...)

I accepted a class date with USA Jet out of Willow Run in Michigan as a DC-9 First Officer.

As with any job, it is going to present it's own unique challenges. For instance, the 'on demand' charter business is naturally schedule-less so you are always on reserve. But, on the flip side, you never know where you are going and can have some very interesting flying adventures all over the North American continent.

It's a 'step up' career-wise for me being assigned to the DC-9. I am really looking forward to it.

Since knowing that I was to be furloughed (and then being furloughed) I sent out countless resumes. I attended a job fair. I earned a type rating through the WIA. I have interviewed with Compass, Air Wisconsin, USA Jet, and Avantair. I also turned down an interview with Qatar because I couldn't afford the travel to Miami for the interview.

It's been stressful being unemployed, but I am very happy with the way that things have turned out. (And, as usual JC has been a great resource throughout the job search/hiring process.)

On another note, I just recently celebrated my third anniversary with my wife. I secretly surprised her with a silhouette that was hand cut by an awesome artist that we know - Karl Johnson. (And in a completely shameless plug, you should check out his site -cutarts dot com- and order something because, trust me, you will get huge amounts of brownie points from your S.O., it literally was the neatest and most romantic thing that I have gotten for my wife since I met her... and every piece is an original piece, and very retro-cool - I'm talking 1800's cool.)

There's a picture of it on his blog. (I attached pics to this thread also - the pics I gave him from our beach wedding and the final piece)

My wife has always believed that I cannot surprise her with anything. This time I surprised her... and she cried. (...in a good way) It was a good anniversary.

I would rather live on 8-mile w/ my boy in his ghetto trailer park then Ann Arbor. :) 2-8 isn't an awful record..

Congrats on the gig btw!

Re: Employed... again!!!!! (and a wedding anniversary too...

Congrats on the new gig.....! What are you going to do, watching all those dials.... ;)

Re: Employed... again!!!!! (and a wedding anniversary too...

Awesome work on getting the DC-9 job! I know you are going to enjoy that airplane. Also congratulations on your anniversary.

Re: Employed... again!!!!! (and a wedding anniversary too...

Congrats! I have to really start taking a serious look at this job market! It's getting about time to make an upward move. I'd love to fly a DC-9!

I have two questions. How is the pay and how did you apply?

Re: Employed... again!!!!! (and a wedding anniversary too...

Thanks for the good wishes so far everyone...

What are you going to do, watching all those dials...

It'll be odd to go back to steam gauges... but everyone says the workload keeps you busy so the flights go by quickly. Those long legs on the CRJ used to just go on forever....

I have two questions. How is the pay and how did you apply?

You should look at the job market... there are jobs out there.

$57/hour 1st Year Pay - 55 Hr. Guarantee. (When they are busy, you are busy and break guarantee...)

CRJDriver listed the job here on JC. (I can't remember where I saw it listed also...) I applied through their website/sent an email application - I got some internal help from Spasekace. I took a psychological assessment, got an interview date, interviewed, and got the job.

Congratulations to you on both!

I guess our scab who resigned and is going to USA Jet, Lusch might be in your class? Watch out for him.

Re: Employed... again!!!!! (and a wedding anniversary too...

Hi!

Only on reserve if you fly freight. PAX is basically all scheduled.

Toughest deal is on call 24/7, then can get a minimum time callout, which is 25 min. So, sometimes, about 15min after you fall asleep, you are called for a 16+ hour duty day, and have to be in operations in 25min or less. Shxx or shower or shave...pick one! NOT very nice (ALWAYS bring food with you...they can't get you food at an FBO at 0330!). My longest reserve period was about 240 hours, and then called for a trip (#1 crew to go out the whole time, as we were on the road in a hotel).

The -9 DOES have long legs: 3-5 hours plus. Minot to Yellowknife is about the longest one I heard of...when they finished their day in Yellowknife they flew -91 to El Paso! That's the way to build hours!

The training is good...listen to everone, and learn from everybody...it was a good job for me, that's for sure! When I got here, to my present company, I showed up, and flew as FO the next day...no training of any sort! The USA Jet training and background was what allowed me to do it safely.
