EMB 145 vs CRJ 700

I am looking for guys that have flown both. I have about 800 hours in the EMB and had fun, but I think I might end up in the CRJ after this next bid. For guys that have time in both which one did you like more and why?

I've only flown the ERJ but rode in a CRJ 700 last year at this time. When I first saw CRJ on the intinerary (company purchased) I just about threw a fit but it was Christmas so anything to get home right. I had only been used to the 200 which is horribly uncomfy in the back.

Gotta say though, I was very pleasantly surprised by the 700. I'd take it over a 737 any day of the week, very comfy. As for flying it, does it pay more and get you home more?

The pay is the same.

No way to tell which one I will hold a line on first. The thing is once you bid for either jet you can never bid the other.

How about the differences in overnights?

They are both going to have ATL(home) overnights. Right now the EMB has better overnights but over the next few months CHQ is taking a lot of the good overnights on the EMB, and the number of CRJ's is going from 25 to 47 so they are going to be adding a lot of overnights. In both planes if things go right on the bid I could be holding a line inside of a year from now. ORD on the CRJ and NYC or ORD on the EMB.

The big wildcard is talk of a MIA EMB base. The top half of ORD EMB has a lot of South FL guys. ORD has a lot of MIA overnights.

Do jet engines get out of sync like props and make that unbearable WAH WAH WAH WAH sound? I noticed it really bad on the Mesa -200 I flew on (first time on the type) last week. That and the fact it was vibrating some of the plastic on the interior made me wanna stab myself in the ears. Only noticed it bad on taxi though.

The CRJ is going to have first class service. That means you might just wind up eating left over first class meals, etc.

The possibility of free chow would tip the balance for me, were I inclined to stay in Chicago.

Longer legs on the CRJ too, which means less work.

If I were you, I'd go that way.

Now this isn't a flying thing and it may not even translate over to your place, but when I was hanging out with a bunch of Comair crews, it seemed that on the -200 the Captains were younger and the FAs would hang with the crew more, where there was only one of them. Also the -200 FA trips went more junior than the -700. On the -700 the CAs were older and seemed less apt to go out. Also with 2 FAs they would usually go do their own thing. I spent many a night at the hotel bar (and other places around town) with a couple of -700 FOs that had nothing else to do, and nobody else to go out with.

Never flown either, but the 700 has slats! Just like the mainliners.

That is somewhat true. The CR7/9 is more senior at Comair, but you fly with some very experience guys. There are some younger guys on it too, though. Out of all the CRJs, the 700 was my favorite. Climbs like a rocket, smoother autopilot inputs and it has FADEC, and less buttons to push than the CRJ100/200. You will have 2 FAs to deal with though, but if they like each other, they won't bother you and they will talk to each other, but if they can't stand each other, then one of them will always be up at the flight deck wanting to talk with you;)

I never flew the 145, but 700 is a pretty nice airplane. It is a lot quieter than the 145, and the cockpit has a bit more room.

:eek::eek: Did you forget the sarcasm tag? Or not ride much?

The 700/900 from the AWA fleets are the absolute WORST riding planes I have ever been tortured to sit in. Vertical pitch and no seat padding.
Better than a 737? Never.

I don't know. I've only been on one and it was a Comair bird. I just assumed they were all outfitted the same way. Big cushy leather seats on the one I was on. Didn't hurt that no one was next to me though. Maybe it was an expectation thing as I was expecting a -200 like experience with the rock hard seats and low windows.

Bid the -700. Since there are two flight attendants, they can annoy each other for four days and leave the pilots alone.

To me, the cockpit noise factor would be enough to drive my decision. Those Brazilian lawn darts are noisy as hell, even in the cabin. The CRJ is a much quieter airplane. You couldn't pay me enough to have to fly 80 hours a month in a cockpit that required David Clarks to keep from losing your hearing.
