DUI??

Yeah I know, I'm an idiot. I got a DUI in November 2005. Just wondering if this is going to be a problem in the future. I plan on attending ARIBEN later this year. Could this hinder me from being hired as a flight instructor there? What about Regionals? Any info would be great.

As some poster on JC has made it public knowledge already, I can help you with this one. I got one of those DUIs back in 2000. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter if it was just a "one-time lack of judgment" thing or if it was an "i was young and stupid" thing, it will always come up. It will forever be a skeleton in the closet, but rest assured you and I aren't the only ones. Not by a long shot.

As far as Aviator goes, they don't care. A good flight instructor is hard to find, if you're good, they want you!

As far as the regionals go, some will shun you right off the bat, others don't care. When I got hired, I came right out on the interview and told them, point blank. They seemed less than concerned. It really depends on who you interview with.

Also a couple of other factors include, how much time you put between "present day" and "date of conviction". '05 is rather recent. You won't have a problem at the Aviator but getting into the regionals may require either a little more time or a stellar resume(no checkride busts, CFI-Goldseal, ATP written, etc.).

It will also come up every time you go for your medical. My AME reviews my entire life story every time I go. Also, it will, show up on your drivers record, which most airlines are going to check before they hire you.

Just think of it as a big step down the ladder that you now have to reclimb. And of course, make absolute sure you never need to say you have 2 DUI's... that may become the burning of the ladder altogether.
Good luck!

thank you for info. i have posted questions about this a couple of times here on JC, but i can't ever stop thinking about it. just reassuring myself.

It is hard knowing you have a blemish on your record but right now there are a lot of companies who aren't too picky about who they take on.

True, but remember who runs most companies....insurance! Our insurance company wont even allow us to train any students with a DWI or DUI on their records. Its stupid and it sucks. Without insurance....no buisness.

I have buddy who made a stupid mistake when he was young and got a arrested for possesion with intent! He has been flying for 7 years now.....just not in the 121 world.

Out of curiosity, if you don't mind saying, who do you work for? I had a dui in Feb of 2000 when I was a retarded college freshman and I'm wondering which regionals are the ones who will shun me immediately when it comes time to interview.

If you have a DUI you have to ask yourself how far can you go in this career? Sure, you can get hired with a scumbag regional but at the moment they are hiring anything with a pulse. The majors is different and that's where you want to be as fast as you can be. Competition is tough enough at the best of times. They have no need to hire guys with a history of substance abuse. Not what you want to hear I guess?

I guess Republic must be one of those "scumbag" regionals...

He flys for gojet. He loves it, just ask him.

HA! I wish I flew for them!! I fly for the same "Scumbag Regional" you fly for lowery. Now that thar some funny shi....

I couldn't tell you which one's will shun you right off the bat. Go out, do it, live it, and enjoy it. Some of these naysayers tell you you won't make it to a 'major' with a DUI, well, the "scumbag" regional I fly for is, as many of you know, considered a major. And if you think the 'Legacy' airlines don't hire guys who made that one mistake years and years ago, then you'd be wrong. There are plenty of them out there.

I'd rather hire a guy who had one old DUI (and learned from the mistake) than someone who tried to topple a flight school and had a $5000 bounty on his head! But what do I know?

I still think there's something wrong with a school that puts a bounty on the identity of somone giving them bad publicity so it can kick them out. Why not try to fix the problems?

Don't recall hearing about that story. Was I sleeping in class that day or sumthin?

Hey! I just got hired by the same 'ScumBag Regional" that Gonzorox and Lowery work for. Hello fellow scumbags!!

Maverick, you got hired? Did I miss it in one of your thread? Congrats!

Oh, I digressed. Hey, like all the other naysaying individuals trying to deter someone against their dream, if you've got a DUI, it's not a death sentence. Yep, it'll be hard. . .really hard, but definitely not impossible. Now, if you were a pedophile, forget it.

My "crime" was to use this forum to make genuine, honest criticisms of Aviator, and how Mike Cohen, runs the operation. For this reason, the guy put a $5000 bounty on my head. This is kind of different to a DUI. Now, the "guy who had one old DUI (and learned from the mistake)," got himself arrested, charged and prosecuted by the cops and has a permanent stain on his record. Me? I have no stains on my record to worry about. Sure, you'd rather hire the guy with a DUI, but you're not exactly unbiased on that one and you're not doing the hiring anyway!

So you wish you worked for Gojets. Me too; we have something in common! I only have to worry about if I meet the minimum hiring times. You also have to worry about if they will accept you with your DUI. Maybe they will, maybe not, that's going to be the story of your career and that of any other DUI guy. It's similar to the old 4 year degree or no degree debate I guess.

You don't honestly believe the Xjet BS about being a Major do you? The real "Majors," are legacy carriers and airlines like ABX, UPS and others with great pay and awesome equipment. Not big regional airlines. No, I don't work for a major but one day will do. When your buddies are moving on to the real majors you'll understand that that you don't work for a major either. That's when it will bite, that for you, it's going to be even tougher to get in.

It can be done though. The story of Lyle Prouse is an extreme example (more like an FUI) but google the name and read the story:-

CNN.com - Lyle Prouse: Pilots and drinking - July 3, 2002

Congratulations Maverick on the job, but why did you wait so long and the go to Xjet. Why not wait for Sky West? A guy like you could have made it in, no problem.

FF... you know what?? I am going to go out on a limb here and say that I am not even worried about not getting hired to a 'legacy' because of an old DUI. Me personally, I study very hard, I take my job very seriously, most of all, I love my job... people see this, people remember this. Isn't that what this biz is all about "Networking". I'm not worried about making it to a Legacy(if I even choose that route). I will live it as it happens.

I am still curious to hear just exactly what you are doing with that aviation career of yours? You never answered that question. Are you flight instructing, at a 'scumbag regional', sitting on the couch, flying 135, working for FEdEx?? Give us a hint.

And I forgot to add the sarcasm tag on saying I wished to work for GoJets, so I guess we go back to having nothing in common.

And Maverick, Congratulations on scoring a scumbag job you scumbag!! ;)

Hey, Gonzo. I think FF is either instructing or at the best working for one of those regionals that us scumbags are or will be taking routes for. Clearly he does not know the industry but I would rather have an xjet contract than a Sky West. Nothing against Sky West guys (still listening for that German Hippie on the radio) but I would rather have representation in case of an incident than none at all…

Oh please C_C don't call me Gonzo!! :D Someone else we all know and love has that name! ;)

How's Cali? Are flying AquaFresh or Delta out there?? PM me, let me know how things are going.

What am I doing? Well, I wish I could tell you exactly what but that would waive my anonymity; maybe that's what you want? Lets just say that I am somewhere much more scumbag than Xjet, but will soon be somewhere much less scumbag. One day, all will be made clear though!

Oh by the way, I have no personal problem with you Gonzorox. You were a good pilot, good CFI, good guy and am sure that you are good at your current job. It's great that you are happy at Xjet and I hope things stay that way. You have got big balls to answer questions on your DUI on an open forum.
