Dual Garmin 430s

I wasn't aware we were talking about the training environment. If that's the case, then I 100% agree.
I believe the OP is going to school and training on a seminole. I think that pilots hurt themselves by solely focus on cool technology while training like the G1000 instead of learning the basics and then learning the other stuff.

I didn't find ATP's 'Nole fleet to be overly (excessively) advanced. 430s + steam gauges are not the same as 430s + magic PFD/ADI/MFD/whatever. You still learn how to scan, and all that good stuff...

It's nice to leave on on the CDI page and another on the map, makes a PP GPS approach easy. ATP has simulator software on their website, look under student resources.

Thats good. Although regular CDIs and a DME will help prevent the ol "D>" follow the magenta line.

Thanks for all the input guys!

I have always been trained using steam gauges. During my PPL training I only used a GPS twice, and a KLN during my Instrument training. I love the steam gauges. The Seminole I flew at ATP was a nice mix of modern and old school.

Ouch. I don't know why they would charge you? The flight school I went to had a 430 simulator that wasn't hooked up to anything pilots could play with.

Not ouch, just the normal rate of the flight instructor was charged at the normal ground rate. Nobody ever asked to mess around with it on their own so I don't know if there would be a charge for that.

I don't know why people are so timid about technology and call it an "overkill".

Timid? The argument against is cost and opening your own wallet. Think about it that way.

The biggest issue in this day and age is cost. Why spend the extra 30-50 per hour to learn on a G1000 if you have other reasonable options (not talking /U 150s here)? I had the opportunity to do my instrument in a G1000 DA-40, but I chose to do it in a 1982 172 (with a 430W+ steam) instead. The G1000 with flight director just makes the ILS wayyy too easy for a student. Although it definately decreases workload for the already proficient instrument pilot.

Note to link two Garmins together both units have to have the same database loaded. As if upgraded to WAAS both have to be upgrade to link.

I don't have a problem with having a panel mount IFR GPS in a DA20, just for IFR training. I thought the glass panel was the killer to me.

It's sort of like some people think that the more they have the better/safer/smarter/skilled they are. I know that's a blanket statement and not true 90% of the time but I can think of at least three rich, doctor types who have nicely equipped airplanes. All of whom I would be ready to grab the controls if I flew with them. Just sayin...
