Don\'t shoot at crop dusters!

From my AOPA e-pilot newsletter, this was just to much.
What an idiot!


RACE FAN GETS SIX MONTHS FOR FIRING AT CROP DUSTER
A NASCAR fan armed with a deer rifle and emboldened by a high blood-alcohol level has been sent to prison for six months after firing on a North Carolina crop duster last year. The man opened fire on D. Wayne Slaughter, who owns Wa-Lu Aviation in Farmville, North Carolina. Medication may have enhanced the effects of the alcohol, the shooter's attorney told the court. The shooter couldn't hear the televised race while Slaughter was legally dusting pine trees nearby, so he successfully drove the airplane off after a 12-shot volley. Three of the shots hit the aircraft, one piercing the wing a foot from the Air Tractor's fuel tank and another causing the battery to explode. The pilot was not hit but suffered mental anguish. Slaughter, past president of the National Agricultural Aviation Association, said he hopes publicity about his case will encourage other ag pilots to report similar incidents

Why does the article state he is a race fan? Did that have any bearing on the incident? Or is AOPA just trying to foster the antiquated image of NASCAR fans being rednecks?

Another good reason I hate AOPA. No I'm NOT a member and havent been for years.

Ask Phil Boyer whether AOPA is for profit or not - you'll be surprised at the answer. Only the safety foundation is non-profit, and they use that for incredible tax advantages.

Antiquated? Ha...

I got free tickets to the Pepsi 400 in Daytona back in 2001. It was cool to see once, but I don't plan on ever going to another one, mostly because of the kind of people there. And the fact that it looks like a "high speed traffic jam" (I guess thats an oxymoron). You want real racing...Indy and F1 is where its at.

The article goes on to say that he shot at the plane because he couldn't hear the televised race.

That guy should be locked up. I think six months is too short of a time. What he did is attempted murder.

As for perpetuating stereotypes, well, what do you call a guy who gets liquored up and shoots at an airplane because he can't hear the commentary during a NASCAR race?

What's wrong with that? I thought entrepreneurship was the true American Dream?

As for AOPA perpetuating the stereotype of NASCAR fans as a bunch of rednecks...NASCAR does a much better job of that with their own broadcasts every Sunday. I personally don't buy into it, but when you watch a three hour race and every broadcaster, pit crewman, driver, etc is a white guy with a southern accent, it doesn't present a real diverse image.

I agree with Tony. Lock this guy up for a lot longer.

Nothing against NASCAR, but I'd rather watch a plane crop dusting. I agree that six months is not enough of a sentence.

Sheesh....it was a deer rifle, not a 12-guage. And it was 12 rounds, not just unloading a shotgun magazine. Dang media can't get anything right.

You're kidding. I'd loved to only have to have dealt with small arms.
