Does ATP hire......

Folks who DID NOT go through the cfi program? I am currently using WIA funding to get my cfi mei ii and the feds will not let me go to ATP since they are not on the WIA list. (Workforce Improvement Act)

I know they prefer the career pilot program grads and those with some ATP exposure but I also understand they are VERY DESPERATE for instructors right know to the point that they are garanteeing a job for ANYONE that does a CFI course. I also understand that ATP instructor turnover is huge (that's a good thing) and a bunch of guys and gals are flying thier butts off.

Can anyone shed light on this issue? I would appreciate any help.

Thanks a bunch fellow JCEr's!!

They have hired off the street before. When they need the instructors they will do it again.

I wonder if they would take cfi's who did any of their courses.

They do.

Not sure if they take outside CFIs, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Last I heard they were really hurting for CFIs. FlightSafety Academy was too.

I think they would...with the right experience, but at that point you could likely get on with a regional.

Someone going through the CFI program with low multi has a good chance because that program is essentially an interview. (or a MIFR, MEI add, exc.)

2 year IP's have a really good shot, but someone with low times and completely green to ATP might have a bit of a harder time.

Getting through standardization without ever flying an ATP airplane would be difficult, not impossible, but it wouldn't be easy.

Im thinking doing the CRJ course through them and meybe instruct there if I like the facilities.

You might want to talk to the folks at ATP about getting their program certified to accept the WIA money... when I went through the WIA in '10 they told me that places could be certified to give the 'training' you need if they jump through the gov't hoops.

I also wrote a thread about my own experience: Workforce Investment Act - My 'How To Guide' (for anyone unemployed and interested in the program)

The CFI course is somewhat the preliminary interview because they get to know you and you learn to do things their way. The instructors will vouch for you if you do well. I do believe the actual interview is their standz class. If you do well, you get the job. If you don't, you're sent home. They even send their own career program graduates home. So, I could see them hiring CFIs off the street and keep them or cut them loose depending on how well they do. I'm not sure if they still do this but you can buy dual flights with their instructors at a discounted price before or during the standz class.

I came to ATP with a CFI/II and ~580 TT. I did the commercial multi-add on 10 hour program and then the MEI 15 hour program. I had 22 hours multi-time after completing them both. My examiner was apparently impressed with my performance and said he'd like to see me instruct for them - so he put in a good word, along with the instructors I flew with.

I followed up with John Amico once every few weeks with an e-mail expressing my interest in working for them. I also visited the facility a few times during the wait. I didn't really get a response from John, he was swamped.

I finished the MEI course mid November and got a call from John on Jan 21st inviting me to attend standardization class on Jan 31st. I built about 260 hours there and was hired by a regional in June.

So, I typed too much - but yes they do hire off the street, and now would be a great time to see if you could get a job. Just be tactfully persistent, it works.

Thanks for the replies everyone!!! SO looks like I got a shot. WIA, while great, makes you jump through a lot of hoops, A LOT OF HOOPS! But, hey, if you want something, you got a work hard at it and jump the hoops. Cleared I appreciate the write up. Super, thanks for sharing your experience.

Does anyone have an idea how long most instructors are staying? Lets assume you were a recent graduate of either the ACPP or CFI program with 400/50 and you get assigned one of the busier locations. How much time will you realistically be flying and how much of that will be twin time (i.e. do new instructors start in the 172)? Also how long do they make you answer the phones these days before you can start instructing. Thanks

Could anyone kindly answer Gavelston Aggie's question? I too am curious. Gavelston, I looked at ATP's website and it appears that the turnover there is quite high right now. (Good Thing) Lot's of folks leaving mostly to Eagle, though I would stay to have more of a choice of airlines to choose from. I also think the quickest you can get to the left seat, the better so that would be a +.

Instructors stay for about 8-12 months. But if Eagle is taking their instructors at 500 hours it could be much less now, as that was a year or two ago. Remember that's working 7 days a week.

7 days a week? How do you do laundry, shop for groceries etc? Do you guys suffer from burnout? What about a bum day? Like if you get FXE or Daytona, wouldn't it be nice to veg out somewhere or go to Duvall street in the keys? Not saying if I get hired with ATP I won't work the 7 days I would/will but how do you cope with that?

You get days off and time off, but you will work your butt off.

100 hours month, almost all of it multi, is not at all abnormal.

Okay , now I see. Sounds like a good, hardworking gig to me. I just didn't want to get into a plane with a student and smell like "booty". 100 hrs a month is right up my alley. Heath, didn't you have a blog that described your training and working for ATP? If you do, can you direct me to it?

You just do it. Make it work. It's worth it.
