Documentation for Gold Seal CFI?

I'm hoping to maintain a good pass rate, and have my CFI ticket renewed at the FSDO and be eligible for a gold seal. What kind of documentation should I be keeping? I've been told nothing, that since your CFI number is on the 8710 the FAA are already tracking your success rate. I've also been told to keep copies of the 8710s. These seem like extremes, but I'd appreciate some insight from someone who has done this.

Best thing to do is to keep copies of the completed 8710s and take them with you to the FSDO. You'd be surprised, many FSDOs don't keep track of pass rates of instructors. I'm really not even sure if any do?! All the ones I have been in contact with did not. When I went for mine I had to have all 8710s because not all the checkrides were with the same district. Hope this helps!

P.S. I always keep copies of logbook endorsements and 8710s when a student is finished with a course and I was the instructor.

Why don't you just call up the local FSDO and ask one of the Operations Inspectors? This is pretty straightforward and you can find out exactly what "your" particular FSDO wants in the way of documentation.

Pscraig-

I pity you if you have to deal with the inspectors out of the RIC FSDO. Couple of real charming individuals they have there. [read: a$$holes]

Anyways, good luck.

I called the FSDO and the inspector suggested I keep the name, cert number, date of checkride, and results so they can "spot check". I just created an Excel spreadsheet to get it all organized.

Ha, yeah, but I know first hand. I happened to be at PHF one day when they were out sniffing pants. Lucky me.

Thanks for the info. on the Gold Seal stuff, btw. I was wondering about that myself, I'm going to renew on pass rate here in a few months when it comes due. I imagine the process is the same.
