Disturbing Story for OTS that aren't CTI or Vet Pref

I work for the FAA in Tech Ops. I have been here for 5 years. I wanted to try to become an Air Traffic Controller so I applied to PUBNAT7 since I don't know of a way to just transfer internally yet. Took the AT-SAT, scored 100. Got the dreaded "another candidate has been selected..." message a few weeks ago.

My Geo Pefs were very limited so I may have screwed myself there but I wasn't willing to move at this point in my life, especially when I already have a good job with the FAA. I wanted to be able to become an Air Traffic Controller in the same building I work now. So unless you have a crystal ball and pick the lucky tower out there that is hurting for people and no one else had it on their geo pref's, you are probably screwed if you aren't done with your CTI school already or have Vet Prefs on your side.

You're posting it here too, eh? Passing up six PUBNATs only to not get picked up on the seventh isn't disturbing... it's OTS. Sorry you didn't make it, but most didn't. That's why it's been common knowledge for two years now that you apply to every single one. If you feel like holding out for a better contract, fine, but you can't complain about opportunities you willingly declined.

hmmm. So you are telling me that I am screwed if I didn't finish CTI yet? How so? Hiring is done for? No more controllers needed ever? Damn.... Guess I will call school tomorrow and drop out.

Hiring is slowing down, yes, it was posted in their report for a 10 year plan. OTS seems to be going away, and CTI and VRA seems to be the main emphasis. There are also more schools coming on deck with becoming CTI certified.

Take it for what it's worth, I scored a 97 on my AT-SAT, am going to CTI, applied to PUBNAT's4-8 and havent been picked up. Guess what though? I'm still not bitter. I tried this venue, and it didnt work. Nothing is guaranteed anyways. It just depends if you're going to apply yourself to the other venues available in order to get hired.

I'll give you credit if you chose a path, however, I dont have much sympathy or pity for those that dont venture out to get what they want. My priorities changed, and I have nothing against ATC or the hiring standards as crazy as it may seem.

I like how everyone that posted took this as if I'm crying about my situation. All I did was state the facts and say why I didn't work out right now for me. I have no doubt that I will move over to air traffic internally in the next few years, but if YOU want to get in, then I suggest getting in a CTI school ASAP and not be 29 years old when doing it.

@Ross..."everyone has known for 2 years..." I applied to Pubnat 7 a year and a half ago. Crap kinda hit the fan between now and then with the hiring slowing down, dunno if you realize pubnat 7 was December of 2008, not last week, but you keep going on about the common knowledge and my complaints

@JKoff...did you even read my post? CTI and Vet Pref are good to go. Stay in school...or don't read and try to be a smart a$$, your choice.

@Bigey...yup, pretty much what I was getting at. I am an Engineer and was gonna try something new out. Didn't work out. Not too worried about it, especially with internal transferring if I really want to do it.

i tryed to tell you nubees years ago about this, the FFA NEVER WANTED TO HIRE OTSs, in 1998 the plan was only CTI and VRA hires. the only reason the FFA started hireing OTS was after the the IWR in sept 2006 many controller retired that year and so many CTIs AND VRAs didnt take the jobs because they were being screwed the FFA was running out of folks to hire so they started the OTS process and it worked because so many were willing to work for 30% less and be treated like crap.

now that O is in office and the old timers are getting an extra 1% on top of ther regular cola for the next 3 years they are staying, pluse traffic has been down 30% since 2005 so the old timers are not working very hard, you nubees may think your busy now but you dont know how busy it will get if traffic comes back.

its supply and demand nubees lots on the list and no jobs, when hireing starts very few OTSs will be hired it will mostly be CTI and VRA unless they run out names of those two lists.

You are not going to stop until you find someone to coddle you, are you? Long/short -- this is not disturbing. You have to live with your decision.

I too was FAA Tech Ops. Applied to PUBNAT 2. Requested through Air Traffic management to get my same tower. Got it. I'm a controller here now. Checked out in the tower even.

You may just have been late to the party, is all.
