Dispatcher Schedules....

Hey everyone!

I had a bit of a odd question on dispatchers schedules and trading. I know I don't have a job yet but was curious on something regarding schedules and trading shifts. In one thread - I pointed out I was a basketball official in HS and there are a few College/NBA camps this summer I might attend depending on where I am at as far as a job.

I'd wanted to know if trading was legal or is allowed? I know the regulations dictate the number of hours a dispatcher can be scheduled but was wondering if trading would violate that. I know I will be at the bottom of the barrel and okay with that. I am happy working HS games and would be okay putting it off working college games for a year or two.

FAR wise.. there's no issue. Policies vary by company. Most dispatch offices have a policy that allow shift trades as long as they don't violate the FAR's.. for instance you can't schedule yourself more than 10 hours and need an 8 hour break between shifts. You also need 24 hours off every week, or the equivalent there off in a month. So basically, you need 4 days off most months and could conceivable work 27 straight days... though you'd probably be a burned out beyond belief.

Ease of trades depends on your specific office. Some people are really good about trades, some could care less. Some will want you to do a shift trade but be really... difficult... to pin down to get the day back. You eventually find out which people to avoid trading days with.

Policy will vary vastly by company, but universally you will not be allowed to violate FAR rest requirements. Technically speaking as the regulation reads, you can theoretically work 28 days straight, have 8 days off (4 in the end of the month, 4 in the beginning) and work another 28 straight, but unless you're working for Mesa is highly unlikely your employer will condone this as it is realistically dangerous. At Ryan we had a company policy of 24 hours rest in 7 days. Your mileage may vary...

Thanks all! My job as a dispatcher would come first, the officiating is more like a hobby for me.

The camps would be good for me to attend but not guaranteed to get picked up by a conference at the D1 level, more like D2 or D3 to start.....NBA would is wishful thinking for me.

The money is good at the college or pro level.

In theory you could work every day in the month and still be legal.
I know it depends on the start time/end times.

Transistioning frm a mid to a day or day to an afternoon will give you 24hours off but still working consecutive days

Yeah but who's nuts enough to do that??? I predict that individual would put a bullet in his head. Hahaha...

That's what I love about this forum -- concise answers on a relevant topic. That's why we all visit daily. If I owned a muffler shop I'd be reading "The Exhaust Times" or "Mufflers Today" As it is we are dispatchers, and really don't have a trade magazine. But, who needs one when it's all right here.

I thought that is what the ADF was for??

We should start a magazine and call it "Aircraft Dispatcher Monthly"

I would be the first to subscribe. It would be hard to beat the free content we all enjoy here though. The thing about the ADF is the live events. The open bar, great food and great networking at an ADF seminar more then cover the membership dues. Hope to see some of you there someday.
