I've seen some discussion of this in various threads, but thought it would be interesting to explore what personalities and personality traits are necessary to succeed in dispatch. I attached a poll for the Myers-Briggs personality type test, so feel free to share. If you haven't taken the test before, here is a good site for it: http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp.

I, for one, graded out as an INTJ. Reading the description from the website above, it seems like a somewhat logical fit for dispatch. By no means do I have a perfect personality, but I would imagine that many of us on this forum have somewhat similar personalities that have naturally drawn us to this line of work. Myers-Briggs definitely isn't an end-all, be-all metric for describing or encompassing personality. However, it is a good starting point for what I find to be a very interesting discussion concerning what motivates people to enter into, and ultimately sink-or-swim in, a very demanding and somewhat unique career. There are, of course, the surface-level attributes that dispatchers need to have (i.e. multi-tasking ability, good communication, etc.), but I think personality is an important (but not sole) ingredient to making a good dispatcher.

I took the test on 16 personalities and got ISFJ-A a few weeks ago during a ground instructor training. I thought it was interesting but not 100% accurate.

"ENTJ often find themselves in careers that require good analytical and planning skills" I'd say that sums up dispatch pretty perfectly lol

In all seriousness I believe that 1/3 of possible success in Dispatch is intelligence, 1/3 is personality and 1/3 is determination. I've seen people struggle who have 1 or two of the three but the truest great Dispatchers will hit all of them.

To be fair, those 3 things can apply to pretty much every career.
Not sure you have to be very intelligent nor very determined to work quite a majority of jobs out there. Requiring both rules out a bunch, then add in that the wrong personality can make a huge affect negatively on quality of the Dispatcher. Not sure if I'm making my point.

Put it to you this way, there is total < 2000 mainline Dispatchers counting all 6 Airlines. And of which ~ 75 or less have been hired in the last year. I'm willing to bet that more than 60 are very intelligent, very determined, and come from the same 5 or so personality groups. I'm also willing to bet that people I've just described are not only sought after, as is the case in many industries, but required, and anyone not fitting that description "slipped through the cracks".

Note: I'm not an expert, only sharing my thoughts.

Interesting poll and topic, but one shouldn't accept this premise. The "necessary to succeed" is a bit of a problem, imo. I understand what you're getting at. Perhaps helpful to succeed. Point is, you'll meet all sorts of Myers-Briggs personality types that succeed in dispatch and do well at their job.

The question is whether or not people like or can tolerate your personality on the floor! lol

And... here at Delta we all have the best personalities since we passed the super-scientific test. Of course.

I'd agree with that, my wording wasn't particularly precise. Just think it's an interesting topic.
