Did Somebody Wonder About Riddle Grads??

So, I'm talking to a good friend of mine from the community college I used to attend. We're discussing life and flying and he was excited because he just interviewed for a corporate gig. He said that he was at a substantial disadvantage because the other three folks that interviewed had time in that type of aircraft, corporate experience and about 500 times more flight time than he did. Then he said it...

"I don't know why I wouldn't get it. I mean, I went to Riddle - I got the bomb-a** degree. Why wouldn't I get it?"

crazy.gif

So, you Riddle guys...that's why people feel the way they do!!
grin.gif

I asked him why he should get it just because he went to Riddle....he replied because everybody knows that Riddle is the best program around and that they turn out the best product.

I could give you his address....
grin.gif

It's so sad. I know that no everybody from Riddle thinks that way, but it seems to be more the rule than the exception these days. This guys a smart guy, but he's always had everything handed to him - never paid for his own tuition, never busted his ass to pay rent.

Maybe I'm bitter because I've done it all from my own pocket, slowly (sometimes VERY slowly). People make Ramen jokes...I lived on Ramen and grilled cheese for a month straight once. No lie....so I could finish a damn CFI ticket.

So, screw all the Riddle Guys....

You guys have heard my side of this, and I know that most of you are reasonable people.

I'm going to make my next statement very clear:

The majority of Riddle students are working their way through school, or are massively in debt. We work our way through our ratings just like everyone else, with the same commitment and dedication.

I don't just say these things to save face. I see how much energy goes into people's goals here. Do not begin to think that we ERAU students don't have to work for what we do.

So, I have a challenge that I expect to be answered on this thread by Riddle-bashers from all flight schools: Can you tell me, with any degree of truth, that nobody at your school is cocky and arrogant going into the industry?

If people don't answer, or reply "no," then this Jetcareers Riddle-bashing trend ends here. Don't beat around the bush. This is a "yes or no" question.

Yes, there are people that come off as cocky and it has nothing to do with the industry. You could pick any industry for that matter. From what I know or have heard, Riddle has name recognition in the aviation industry as opposed to some other possibly lesser known schools.

I sure there are both cocky and non-cocky individuals that attend Riddle. As in any other school or training facility. While the "Riddle" anme may get someone an interview, they will still have to open their mouth in the interview. If that cockiness comes out during that time, then they may be in for a surprise.

You could apply this to any job, aviation related or not, but if anyone thinks they deserve a job because of where they went to school, then they are crazy. That attitude will catch up with them.

I can see the interview now......
<hr>"So why should we hire you over another person?"
<applicant>"Because I went to school X".
......Red flag goes up...........
<hr>"O.K. we have your info, there are a few interviews to complete before a decision is made".

</applicant> Still waiting for a call.......................

Yup. Back in the days when I was hiring people, you would not believe the number of people who responded to the question "why should I hire you?" with something like "well, I went to [fill in your prestigious school]."

I didn't hire any of them. The folks I hired went to such prestigious schools as East Carolina, West Virginia, Syracuse, Maryland, and UC Santa Barbara.

West Virginia

Hey Hey that is one of the top party schools in the country every year!!!

No Riddle bashing here. Just me bashing this one bad Riddle example. And he and the cocky guys like him deserve it. But I wouln't say these guys represent the Riddle population in any way. But that's because I know better. Others take their first impressions and go with that for everybody. Thats why these bad apples need to be beaten

I'd have to agree with MikeD and RiddlePilot on this one. People with that kind of attitude here (here being ERAU) really annoy the crap out of me and its a comforting thought to know that eventually they'll get purged by the system. It just totally sucks that people like that form a stereotype about the ERAU culture and the rest of us have to suffer from it. Blah. lol Not that being a little cocky is bad, but thinking Riddle is the master key of the airlines is just arrogant and ignorant.

I just have school spirit

So tell, what does that have to do with Riddle? Do you think my dad pays for my car, my house, my tuition and my life in general? You would be a fool if you said yes, and an even bigger one dislike hard working guys from a flight school just because for some reason you thought you had it hard when you went through your ratings. Ramen diet? Funny indeed, and I understand. I have a tight budget, and I cant go ask people for money.
This is great to get on the table, as it really makes me see how ill informered most of the aviation community is about ERAU. If you for one second think that all of here get fat checks every month, they you are sadly mistaken. Dont take a percentage of the population and apply it as a rule. I dont go around shooting my mouth off saying I am high and mighty, nor do I rip on the FBO trained pilots. I have respect for others, so unless you do too, keep your groundless opinions to yourself. This BS is getting really old, but maybe I should just go to another webboard and forget about this one. More hassle than it is worth once it is discovered you go to Riddle.

So you must be MTSU's friend

He never said that riddle pilots had everything easy/ paid for. He said his friend had it easy, and that he could be bitter over that.

Good God who peed in your Cheerios? It's really not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things....is it? "They'we bashing Widdle attendees again...my feewings are huwt. I'm weaving." If I had a penny for every time something on this site offended me.....I'd have a lot of pennies.

But the good information and entertainment I've gotten from this site over the years makes it worth it for me. Besides, I've been told as a pilot I need to learn to have thicker skin. Stick around.

And...I might call mtsu a few things, but owner of groundless opinions wouldn't be one of them.

LMFAO.

Call me pro Embry-Riddle if you want, that does not bother me. I just find it rather rude and disgusting to bash the school as well as those who attend the institution. I mean people invest time and money into their degrees, how do you think it makes someone feel when they see posts like this. I mean I do not oppose anyone that believes that Embry-Riddle does not give an advantage to its students, as you have the right to your own opinion. Nevertheless, I do believe that attending other institutions do not provide an advantage either. The last time I checked, the aviation industry was slow on a whole, not just slow in hiring Embry-Riddle grads. The school has a name and does try hard to provide world class aviation education in ALL ASPECTS and not just flight. The name is world known and Airlines around the world look for it, as they know a certain standard is met. The Air Force Academy trains there as they know a certain standard is met. The school attracts the best and the brightest in the industry, like Jamial Larkins for example. Attending this institution puts you around people like this and allows for a positive and competitive atmosphere. I mean you can get the same degree if you go to a state University or if you go to Harvard although its much more expensive, nevertheless if one had the chance and the brains they would go to Harvard and Embry-Riddle is comparable in its own right. As aviation fellows we should be encouraging each other through this tough time instead of finding the time to bash Embry-Riddle. Look at the products of the school, Doug and Mike for example as well as the 1/4 airline pilots in the United States. If you do not like the school then you don't, but the point is some people do and have faith in their education.

I don't dislike anybody...I have lots of wealthy friends!!!

Really, the last line was a joke. And of all people, I'm the last one to play the "I had it hard" bit. That doesn't do any good. I don't like whiners...I have a 7-year old that doesn't whine, so why should I? Just makes you look like a little girl.

Ramen diet? Funny indeed, and I understand. I have a tight budget, and I cant go ask people for money.

[/ QUOTE ]

It's funny, but not very healthy...lol. I had to do what I had to do, though. I'm not "hating" on anybody so don't take what I said the wrong way. I wasn't referring to everybody that goes to or has gone to Riddle. Some people can afford it. Some people can't. If you've got the money and don't mind spending it, then do so! I'm going to hold nothing against you!!

[/ QUOTE ]

Not ill-informed, bud. I assure you. I even applied to there. i know alot of people that went there, and I know some people that are still there. Having an opinion about one of my friends doesn't mean that I'm ill-informed. Just means that I have an opinion about my friend!!

[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]

No, no, no. I don't think that everybody there gets fat checks every month. Not at all. I do know, however, that it costs alot of money to attend that school. I also know that ER is way outside of the reaches of the majority of the people that I know. I didn't say that it made them better or worse. Just means that they have (or have access to) more money - or that they have parents that are willing to go much farther in debt. For some of us, that's not even an option.

[ QUOTE ]

I dont go around shooting my mouth off saying I am high and mighty, nor do I rip on the FBO trained pilots.

[/ QUOTE ]

And that's a good thing, because I'd have to check you for being silly. In my post, I didn't rip on this person with regards to his piloting skills. I ripped on him for having a piss-poor attitude.

[ QUOTE ]

I have respect for others, so unless you do too, keep your groundless opinions to yourself.

[/ QUOTE ]

With that comment, my cordiality is wearing extremely short with you.

Nothing about that opinion was groundless. I spoke about one particular person, discussed his particular situation and then summarized the entire thing with my opinion about him. That sounds like pretty good grounds to me. Now, if you don't agree with it...well, I'm sure that I won't lose any sleep.

[/ QUOTE ]

Is this where I'm supposed to say "Please, don't go"?? nobody is knocking you as a Riddle student. I don't have to sleep with that, you do. So stop getting your size 3T panties in a wad over a matter-of-fact conversation about one person. You don't have to be worried about me screwing with you....it's not in keeping with my particular persuasion

To everyone else that may have been offended....I'm not making fun of Riddle any more than I'm making fun people that own homes in SOCAL or wear a ROLEX. If you have it, it doesn't bother me.

Nothing worse than somebody that likes to pretend that they're poor while they're eating caviar....

DEAL WITH IT!!

I work with two Riddle grads as CFI's....they are both very cocky and very pompous. You can not tell them they are wrong, and if you end up showing them they are wrong with proof, they always say something to the effect of "Well that's not what they tought us at Riddle....." My boss has a very bad taste in his mouth from thse two individuals as they are very unpopular with the students. I have actually received 3 people from one of the guys because they refuse to fly with him anymore.

I do not think that every Riddle grad is like this, or that people from other schools are any better, there are bad seeds no matter where you go...but these two individuals do not give off a good impression of what is otherwise a fine institution.
