Designated Examiner Fees

Sad part. I paid my CFI, an independent contractor at the time, who trained me to be a CFI $500 cash at the end. And that wasn't just for one ride, that was for the entire course!

PPL:200
IR:300
Multi/Comm: 300
SE add-on: 350

I was surprised that my SE add-on was more expensive. Since I had the multi comm already the oral part of the checkride was around 30 minutes, and the flight was just over an hour--most of that hour was spent getting outside of class B.

Luckily my next ride is free. :)

My private ride was 250-300ish which I failed and he didn't charge for finishing it up the next morning. Now I know that examiner charges $350, but there is another examiner in the area that charges closer to 250.

most likely is that if a candidate bounces a check, the DPE's only recourse is to try to collect on the bad check. The tax evasion is only a side-benefit

I had a DPE tell me one time that "if the check bounces, guess whose paperwork doesn't get sent in?" :pirate:

**I guess that's not a bad thing if we're talking about a pink slip ;)

Yeah, I thought my CFI was messing with me.

On top of that I did the checkride in a G1000 172... nothing like an $900 2.0 in the logbook.

wait, 900 for 2.0? does that include the DPE fee, or just the plane? Even with the fee factored in, 250 an hour for a 172? WTF?

It's $169/hr for the airplane..closer to $190/hr with taxes spent an hour before and a half hour after with my instructor and a $500 DPE fee...

2.0 logged $900 spent..

Ouch, the most expensive fee i've paid was for my CASES. $400, and i was pretty mad about that. I think even my CFI/II was only 300 a pop, and i had sent so much business to the DPE he gave me my CAMEL IR for 100 bucks, a steal.

PPL in 2001 was $250, IR in 2009 was $300.

Wasn't the same DPE, but I don't think what I paid for my IR ride was out of line all things being considered.

taxes? Instructor fees and airplane rental should be tax free because it is considered education...

unless it doesn't apply to the checkride, which would be stupid because it is more or less a test in training.

after that, renting has taxes, but definitely not while in training.

if I'm wrong please don't flame me, it's just what I've known to be true

In so far as income tax deductible, it can be.

But some states charge sales tax, and some airport authorities get a tax on rentals (and other business on the field).

Here in florida we get sales tax, but education is not included. Flight training is education.

but I guess the airport authority part would work.

never thought of writing it off for income tax. as education?

It was a checkride, no instructor. Just some ground before and after.

I'm pretty sure I get charged slaes tax no matter what there.
