Descent From VFR On Top

If I'm on a VFR-On-Top flight, above the clouds in VFR conditions, will ATC descend me as I near my destination (like they would if I was on a regular IFR flight plan with assigned altitudes), or must I request it?
 
ATC cant see clouds. If they try to, you can always say "Unable" and youll probably hear "Roger, Maintain VFR". In most cases you arent goign to get many climb/descent clearances VFR since you are being followed and not controlled in most cases outside the airport "Area".
 
You must be on an IFR flight plan already, and must comply with all applicable ATC clearances and IFR rules, in addition to VFR cloud clearances when VFR on Top. So I'd say that unless there's some greater overriding reason, you must comply with ATCs instructions.
 
I'd probably have a descent point already figured out before the flight. If you get to that point before they say anything, ask 'em for a descent. If they do give you a descent prior, then there ya go.
