Denver schools? CFI jobs?

Looking to hear from some people flying in the Denver area. Any news about any schools there? I will be looking for a CFI job soon and in general just a place to fly and work on my own skills where I feel I am weak.

Was thinking Flights Inc. or Aspen at APA would be a great place to instruct/fly.

At Jeffco all I really know about is McAir as they are top notch, I would love to instruct for them plus I know they have a few new seminoles that I would love to fly so I can stay current on the ME side.

It seems like all the websites of the schools are outdated or don't have a lot of current info. Hopefully someone is hiring in the area? Anyone in the know please drop me a line!

Thanks, Tim Samples

Tim,

I did my PPL last spring at Aspen at APA. I have since moved to the Pheonix area to work on my commercial and instructor ratings, but now I realize I didn't really appreciate Aspen as much as I should have while I was there.

They have an extensive fleet of aircraft: Cessna, Diamond Star--and their new Cirrus SR-20 & SR-22. Also, from reading their newsletter, I see that they are expecting delivery of a Diamond TwinStar.

My experience with the instructors and staff was very good. It is clear that safety is their number one concern (while making flying fun, of course).

I do not know what their instructor situation is currently, but when I left the club a few months ago, several instructors where in the process of moving on to regional or cargo jobs.

If you have an opportunity to instruct with Aspen, deffinitely take it! Chuck, the Chief Pilot, and Mickey we're always very helpful and easy to approach. Your best bet is to call and speak to either one of them.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply, I flew at Aspen once a year or so ago and thought it was a pretty nice setup. I will definetly be putting them on my list of places to drop off a resume' at once a week.

Good to know some people are moving along from the CFI gig in Colorado. Hopefully they open up some spots by spring.

Thanks again for the update, Tim

I am starting a CFI job search in Denver and Fort Collins next week. I'll make sure that I pass along any info that I get.

Are you looking in just Denver?

Good luck!!

Yeah, pretty much just looking in the Denver area (APA, BJC, or even FTG).

How are the prospects up north?

Tim,
I was just out at McAIr. They have a cool new sim, and a fleet of pretty much new cessnas with a couple of new seminoles. If you are going to look at them, I would be pretty up on the Garmin 430/530. All of their planes have 'em.

It doesn't look too good up here- Fort Collins Downtown is closing sometime soon, so that will displace a lot of instructors. On the other hand, I hear that a lot of guys are moving on to the regionals....

Persistence.

Love your photos, by the way.

Thanks, thats bad news about downtown. Hopefully somehow that will lead to more growth at FNL.

I am pretty good on the Garmin 430, we have two of them in each of our new seminoles I have been flying at ATP so that should help.

Their 172s are very nice, one of the nice features about McAir that attracts people.

Why is downtown closing? That's a bummer. I imagine it's a noise thing. I bet the nearby residents are tired of people flying low over their houses.

I haven't flown out of Downtown, but I used to hunt geese near it. It used to be out by itself, miles from town. Now there are housing developments all around and not many people hunt in the area any more.

I wouldn't doubt if the closure is related to the noise. Too bad.

I got my private at Aspen before I joined the Air Force. I do miss it. Aspen was a great bunch of people and I never had any problems whlile flying there. Plus the perfect landing is a great place to eat just down the street.

I will probably go in there for a checkout next week. Either Aspen on Flights Inc. Will have to weigh it out I guess. I am not sure about Aspen's initiation fee though, not sure I am down with paying for that if the rates are still about the same.

Can't wait to get back in the Colorado air again!

Does anyone know about what kind of total time makes you competitive for a CFI job in the Denver area?

I am right around 280 (half single, half multi) at the moment with my MEI, II, and hopefully by the weekend I will have my CFI single.

Lookin for info, Tim

tim, you done with ATP already? hope you enjoyed your stay in north tx, even though you were in dallas (bleh). you going back to the show for F9 or are you going to try to make CFIing pay the bills? i'm moving to denver at the end of this month - we ought to go grab a beer and bbq sometime.

i flew out of aspen air inc. this summer. seems to be a pretty good place to rent from. unfortunately someone crashed the really nice 182 i flew, but c'est la vie. they have some other nice enough planes and the rates are decent.

Just finished about two hours ago. Passed my CFI single checkride and to be honest, I think it was my best checkride so far, I usually come away thinking I could have done better but today was great.

Yeah I will be over at the F9 GO tuesday or wed begging HR to give me my flight bennies back and work for them a bit too. I want to work PT about 2 days a week at F9 and then hopefully find a full or close to full time CFI gig somewhere in the denver area. I hope it works out.

Drop me a line when you get here, not a big drinker but having someone in the other seat makes flying fun!
