Delta Pilots Report Passport Renewals Taking Up To 3 Weeks

The backlog of applications to receive a new or renewed passport in the U.S. is now affecting pilots. According to the Air Line Pilots Association unit at Delta, the company that it uses to process pilot passports--CIBT--is warning it will take up to two weeks to process an application for a passport renewal, up from four to five business days. However, ALPA reports it has taken three weeks in many cases.

I had to pay for expedited processing (nearly $100 more) for an initial application. These used to take 7-10 days, now they're taking 2-3 weeks, with a few of them taking up to 4 weeks.

It's totally ridiculous.

Well an "official" passport (for Gov't dudes and dudettes) is taking almost 3 months for a renewal...grrrr! :mad:

I sent off my passport for renewal (not a new-issuance, a renewal) sometime in early May.

I have not gotten it back yet, and truthfully don't expect to see it for another several weeks.

I'm not in a hurry, nor do I need it for any specific travel, so I'm just waiting it out to see just how long it takes.

Well, normal processing is taking 12 weeks . . . ;).

Which is why I'm just sitting back and waiting. And looking back at the paperwork, it was actually mid-April that I sent it off, not May. Like I said, I'm in no hurry, it's a good thing to have, but I have no immediate travel plans.

Bill is required to have his, and when his needed renewal (I think it was last fall, before the rush started) he paid for expedited service. If I remember right he actually had it back in his hands within 10 business days. They were really fast with it.

The Russians are slower. I applied for a Russian visa in February!

And I still haven't seen it yet.

So much for those lucrative SVO trips next month :(

One reason they are so backed up is the fact that they are required for travel to Mexico and Canada.

As a matter of fact, they have now relaxed those requirements to allow travel as long as you can prove that you have applied.

Guess the key is to have one before you need it....

I have heard you can get them same day by going to the office in Chicago. Anyone know if this is true?

My wife's Russian.
When I went to visit her for the 1st time there a coupla years ago my visa application only took one week, and that was on the normal request service!

I wonder if temp visa's are taking as long?

I want to send my passport back in to get my married name on the front, because it's amended on the back, i can't slide it in at the kiosk and have to wait in the regular ol' ticket line to tell them i'm traveling non-rev internationally.. yuck!!

That's gonna be the biggest change on mine. My old was just 'amended', and had the new name in the back. When I sent off for the renewal I sent along a marriage certificate, just in case.

I'd say do it while the summer loads are high. Well, perhaps I oughta get my July schedule first to see if you're going to miss out on anything interesting if you're passportless.

Yup! Got in last evening and off to CDG early afternoon for a six-day JFK-CDG-CVG-CDG-JFK! ;)

I went in and sent off my paperwork back in mid-April myself. Hopefully have it back by the end of August. Don't imagine it'd take too much longer than 4 months??? :whatever: Let's hope not...:rolleyes:
